Hi, I am absolutely KILLING my brain over choosing my college among UCSD and several others. I got into Warren and am doing pre-med btw.

I know UCSD has lots of opportunities to get involved but how stiff is competition (med/sciences)? What are the actual percentages of students from UCSD getting into med-school? How bad do people struggle to get that A? Will I done fine if I am passionate about the medical field.

Thanks for the help guys, I really really do appreciate it.

See you on campus hopefully!

50% of the students get into med school. Now, realize this stat includes all med schools throughout the nation and not just top ones like Johns Hopkins, UCLA, etc. If you’re motivated, you’ll be fine.

Pre-med is really hard and really competitive. That’s about all we can say. You’ll be doing a lot of studying, and only the people who want it bad are going to make it through all 4 years. The # of pre-meds in each class drops every year.

But uhhhh “Will I done fine” doesn’t look good to med schools… I mean… for real

The curves in the science courses typically give around 15% A’s for classes like Chem6 series and Chem140 series. Your grade is based on how other people did more so yourself. It’s easy to get B’s but tough to get A’s, so expect to put off some weekends for studying because it may make the difference between the A and the B which matters in the end.

I remember seeing stats for UCSD that the average accepted into a (note the “a”) medical school was average GPA of like 3.65-3.7 overall. That means you can’t slack and I pretty much agree with ucsandiego’s comment. In freshman year, everyone is a pre-med student…which changes dramatically as the years go on.

I hope this doesn’t scare you because if you are truly passionate about the field, you will get into it and it is, without doubt, an amazing field to get into. I just know a crapload of ppl that didn’t get into any medical schools because of the competition and are now taking more time off to build their resumes.
