My son was admitted to Northwestern & would love to attend. The big price tag is scaring us off, and we seem not to qualify for financial aid (this year anyway). While we are appealing the financial aid decision, would it be appropriate or helpful if we went to admissions as well to explain our concerns? I have heard that admissions (in general, not specific to Northwestern) have an interest in preserving the yield & might be more amenable to offering aid. Any thoughts are appreciated.

No, admissions will send you back to FA.

Most of the time, no it does not help. But sometimes it could. There are some schools were fin aid and admissions are in closer contact to each other than in other situations, and may work with each other. Also at schools where need is distributed to a graded scale of admitted students, admissions assigns the grade and if your kid is an “A” admit, and admissions does happen to talk to fin aid, maybe some ideas could be exchanged.

Also, admissions sometimes is instrumental in certain scholarships, need within merit, merit within need being awarded, departmental awards etc, THings that financial aid does not get involved in doing.

For a NU, it’s truly a long shot, but I would call and get their response and maybe some little seed of something has been left.
