so we all sent our applications in. does cornell offer scholarships to those who do well their senior years or something?

The Ivies don't offer merit-based aid, only need-based.

goldshadow is correct. No matter how good your grades are, you wont be getting anything for it. It's all based on financial need.

well there is the cornell tradition only like 1% of students get it. get less money if u are not on finacial aid

wow i didn't know about that abike. I love all these cool programs that Cornell has like college scholar, pres scholar, and now, cornell tradition.

There are a few scholarships that could be considered for merit (tradition, meinig, dean's scholars, etc.), but the bulk of the money that comes from those is in the form of need-based aid. For those who are awarded those scholarships who do not require financial aid, a very small book award (600/year) is given.

it depends on the college you apply to too. There are plenty of merit/need based scholarships in Cornell for Architecture Students. These scholarships are given by alumni.

i am a cornell presidential research scholar

its a scholarship program

aren't all the "cornell" scholarships technically organized and managed by alumni?

Do you know how to apply for the merit based scholoarships such as presidential research, meining etc…? Is there anything to check off in the supp. application forms? Pls let me know.
thnx

You can’t apply for them. These are merit based scholarships only as far as the recognition and membership into the organization. As far as money goes, its all need-based. If you have demonstrated need, they will give you money. I received two such awards, but I didn’t apply for them, and I hear that they are VERY competitive to get.

You have to apply to your college, and if you are an exceptional applicant you might receive some form of recognition.

Don’t count on it though, because I know, for Meinig at least, 53 students get it out of the 6k accepted. I’m sure the others are in that range as well.

robinhood, you can’t apply to the Cornell Commitment (Tradition, Meinig, Presidential Research Scholars) as an incoming freshman, but for Tradition at least, you can apply every subsequent year if you aren’t selected from Cornell’s application pool.

If I do exceptionally well in my freshman year at Cornell, is it possible for me to be awarded any merit based scholarship for my remaining years.

These aren’t merit scholarships per se as you have to do stuff (community service, research, internship, etc.) as part of the program. Yes, you can apply in subsequent years for them although they’re not really based on GPA. The CPRS one appears to be the most lucrative. Up to $8,000 for research and up to $16,000 loan-reduction. I had forgotten that bball was in CPRS. What a waste.

I’m sort of bitter as I was nominated by my research supervisor (I believe this is the only way to apply for CPRS if you did not receive it as a freshman) and they only picked 3 that year among the sophomores. Would’ve put the research money to good use.

i’ve heard lots of rumors that the financial aid package for the average middle-class family consists of mostly loans. is this true? my parents are mad at me for applying because they think that, in order to attend, i have to take out $200K in loans. can anyone refute this?

I would say that this is untrue. There are a lot of grants.

thanks! you’ve really eased my fears!

if i win an outside scholarship, will i be able to use it to lower the loan amount that i as a student have to pay or will it go towards lowering my cornell grant?
