Do you think deferred candidates have a lower chance of admission in the regular applicant pool?

It depends on the school. Some don’t deny ED applicants at all and in some cases those are not viable RD packages. For other schools your package is considered against all the new RD applications. But remember, by being deferred they weren’t super happy with your original application so do have other schools in mind.

Thanks for the reply! I personally wasn’t deferred, but was wondering, especially because of the amount of people that have been recently deferred by ivy league schools. I was just curious to know whether or not schools like the ivy leagues would actually take the time to look over an app they had already assessed in the earlier rounds. Apparently the majority of deferred applicants are waitlisted during the regular decision … which sucks

It’s difficult to find stats on the acceptance rate of deferred students, but I recall seeing one elite school recently claiming that deferred students are admitted at roughly their RD acceptance rate - which may or may not be a good thing depending on the mix of students in each pool (internationals, URMs, athletes, etc.).

I don’t know the policy of every school, but many schools have the policy that deferred ED students are never wait-listed, they are given a straight yes or no answer at the end of the RD round.
