do any of you know if duke sends out those letters that say how good a candidate you are and etc. before the actual notification deadline? unc-ch did this.

They wouldn't have to just to admit a few early.

yes and give out free t-shirts and stuff but i didnt get anything so dont worry if you dont

They do according to "Admissions Confidential". It doesn't seem like too many get them.

They do for Trinity College, I think, at least according to Admissions Confidential. Supposedly all the Engineering applicants are read in one day (according to the same book), so they don't get said likely letters.

Not

Trinity definitely sends likely letters... I got one last year.

How does Trinity compare to Georgetown and other Catholic schools?

r u sure pratt doestn send them (im only wondering cuz i want one...)

I'm pretty sure Pratt doesn't. Although I'd love one as well.

Joey

ahh i want one!! good luck ya'll!

bluestar7: how was your likely letter? What did it say or give as a hint??

"Greetings from Duke University! I am delighted to tell you that the Admissions Committee has recently reviewed your application, and we want to share with you the good news that we consider you one of our very best candidates this year. Indeed, as long as you maintain the academica nd personal standards reflected in your application, the Admissions Committee expects to formally offer you admission later this spring."

*this year

wow.. that's not even a 'likely' admit.. that's a straight out admit! when did you recieve this letter? and is it only for trinity?

I graduated with the class of 2004 and I'm taking the year off to explore other interests. I recently applied to Duke RD. Do you think there is any chance of a HS graduate receiving a 'likely' letter like this with a complete application already and no need for a mid-year report?

wow...i thought that they didn't even start reviewing apps until recently. congrats displacednewyorker!

flamingo - I think that you are just as likely to get a likely letter a year after graduating as you would be if you hadn't graduated but I'm just another applicant, so I really don't know. Good luck though! Also, that's really cool that you're taking a gap year (I'm planning on doing one next year contingent on receiving a scholarship to study in Germany).

slipstream - thanks! I think that they send out all of these letters on the 10th, but I'm not sure.

charmedone - just recieved it on the 11th. it was sent on the 10th. have no idea about pratt.

i gave up cc for lent, so see you guys next sunday

I might be eating my words once the mail arrives today...but I gotta say... I think DisplacedNYer's likely letter excerpt sounds like a case for 'Hoaxbusters.' Maybe it's just me...but we have never received anything in this house from Duke University that started out... 'Greetings from Duke University!' I dunno. Just doesn't sound like Duke to me...but hey, I could be wrong.. just sounds a little suspect to me...

has anyone got a letter by now ??

if not, does anyone have any idea when the letters are send usually ??

I WANT ONE ............. DESPERATELY !!!!!!!!

ahtsisab: I do think Duke sends out a little update letter informing you whether you have, or don't have, all your stuff in to them. And I think that probably has been mailed out in the last day or so. (I think someone mentioned that on another thread, too.) And they might possibly send out 'likely letters' ...at some point....however, like I said above, I don't think they send out anything like what DisplacedNYer said he received. I mean, that's not a 'likely letter;' that's pretty much an acceptance. Again, I might be wrong in thinking what he says he received is suspect; if so, I'll be the first to acknowledge my mistake and apologize. Meanwhile...if you're really interested, why not call undergraduate admissions and ask them? It would be interesting to know what they would say.

The above poster who said he got a letter is not lying. I recently received a letter from Christopher Guttentag, Director of Undergraduate Admissions.

It said this exact quote:
"Greetings from Duke University! I am delighted to tell you that the Admissions Committee has recently reviewed your application, and we want to share with you the good news that we consider you one of our very best candidates this year. Indeed, as long as you maintain the academica nd personal standards reflected in your application, the Admissions Committee expects to formally offer you admission later this spring."

PLUS it says:

"I want to add my personal congratulations for the accomplishments that have made you such an outstanding candidate for admission to Duke. We received over 18,000 applications this year, and to be considered among the very best is a singular accomplishment. Well done!"
