Does Duke send out likely letters?

Does anyone know if Duke sends out likely letters or early writes?

I’ve never heard about anyone receiving a likely letter from Duke, but I would love to know if anyone else has an answer to this.

D-1 athletes getting likely letters are the norm - duh
On the other hand, I suppose a handful of academic recruits (especially in math and science) get it too, but the number are rather small, usually <100. I don’t know if this is true for Duke, but for the other Ivies, this is the case.

I remember reading about someone getting one in one of last year’s decision threads. That kid had 2400 SATI and triple 800 SATII’s though.

^I think the academic recruits are more like MOPers/USAMO winner/IMO medalist, IPho, ICo medalists etc, Rickoids, Siemens/Intel finalist…

Yes, Duke does send likely letters, because one member here typed up part of the letter to me in a PM since her son got it. The letter said that the top 2% of the applicant pool receives the likely letter, and these students are considered Duke’s top-tier applicants.

Duke sends likely letters to top academic students. Both my bothers got them, so I know this for a fact. My oldest brother got a free trip to duke. But they discontinued that program the year my middle brother got his likely. The letters go to kids that duke knows will get in to other top colleges.
And no, they do not only go to superstars.
There are many threads from past years about duke likelies

As far as I know, Duke only sends likely letters to under-represented minorities and also notifies finalists for merit scholarships before everybody else (so, that also could be considered a likely letter since you’re obviously getting in if you’re a finalist for a scholarship). Everybody else will have to wait until admissions decisions are released…but if somebody wants to correct me, I’m happy to hear it, but that’s my understanding. In any event, don’t expect one.

Here’s last year’s thread on duke likelies. As I said, not just for athletes, urms, and superstars. They were sent in march 2010.

They are not for superstars.
They get them if they get the absolute majority in the admissions committee (every hand raised in favor of the applicant.)

“every hand raised in favor of the applicant”

Isn’t that the definition of a superstar? At least from Duke’s point of view.

I GOT A LIKELY LETTER TODAY!!
Very similar to last years except instead of 26000 there are 29000…

FYI:
-in not a urm in any way
-not an athlete
-as for superstar, Idk. Depends on what you mean by superstar.

Congratulations! Did it come in the mail?

^ same question. plus, does your online portal say anything different now?

oh, and CONGRATULATIONS!!! :D

Congrats but what do you mean by, " instead of 26000 there are 29000?" what do those number refer too?
