Does Duke send out likely letters?

My son would be considered minority as he is of African origin. The likely letter he received yesterday does not mention minority. The letter does not say anything about scholarhip either. It includes an invitation to attend Blue Devils day or something to that effect. Is this an indication that he may not be considered for scholarship?

D got one, but not exactly sure what it says. We’re traveling and H read to D.

She is not a URM or athelete.

What percentage of admitted students get these letters? Should I be worried about not getting one? :/

Like the others, I’m not a URM or an athlete. I’m an in-state applicant with fairly strong stats, very personal essays, and great recs.

This sounds like the one I received (non-URM). It shouldn’t have any bearing on financial aid, if that’s what you mean by scholarship.

I think your are being falsely modest about not being an athlete or superstar; aren’t you the reigning world champion in your sport?

luther,
I don’t know what the percentage is but it is very small. My high-stat, in-state son did not get one last year but was admitted RD. He is now a happy freshman Blue Devil. Don’t worry.

I got a likely and am not a URM or athlete. Actually, I’m asian x_x. I have pretty good scores, but I am far from a superstar. Someone mentioned earlier likelies go to the top 2%, but there is no mention of this in the letter.

I wonder what decides who gets these letters, then. I know ā€œdemonstrated interestā€ isn’t factored into admissions decisions, but it wouldn’t be too far of a stretch to think that these likely letters go to students with low DI to try and persuade them to attend.

Oh well; maybe I’ll get something later this week! Here’s hoping!

My friend got one too (not urm or athlete). I was wondering if it’s possible to get a likely letter without an interview. I haven’t been contacted for one even though I sent my app in early and there are definitely interviewers in my area…

In reply to redhippo: I submitted my app too late to qualify for an interview…Surprisingly, I still got a likely letter. I was surprised since I’m not a URM or athlete…just a random Asian kid interested in science.

Any of you USAMOer/Intel/Siemens/USNCO/USAPhoer/Rickoids?

I sent in my app on the deadline. I didn’t get an interview, but I got a likely letter.

Yes, it is. I didn’t have my interview until today and received my letter yesterday.

Nope, I’m fairly wretched when it comes to science, lol.

WOW, I didn’t know Duke is sending likely letters already? I submitted my application late November, and didn’t even get an interview. :frowning: What exactly does this letter say? I’m a URM by the way.

i don’t think so. by ā€œathleteā€ i meant that i’m not being recruited by duke. and as for superstar, like you said in another post, once you reach a certain threshold, it’s impossible to say anybody is a reach. Say Harvard (just because it’s got the lowest admit rate) would you put money on me being accepted? I’m still dubious about it all.

nope!

Oddly enough, i got a request for an interview today. lol. i didn’t mention the likely letter and we’re scheduled to meet next week! shows what a lack of communication between alumni and school there is.

That’s hilarious. :)

Interviewer: So why should Duke pick you?
You: Uh, well, they already did. Do I need to explain? xP

Haha. :)

I got one too  These are so random - didn’t even know they existed for non-athletes until a couple weeks ago. I read somewhere (probably falsely) if you get a likely letter you are not being considered for the scholarship letter. Does anyone know if that is true or was that just misinformation or me misreading the post? It seems a little counter-intuitive to me. And yeah, science fair geek right here :)

Last year ā€œlikely lettersā€ were postmarked March 22, arriving in mailboxes around March 24th. This year’s letters do not follow the previous patterns for ā€œlikely letters.ā€ This earlier date is intriguing. I wonder why Duke is sending them out 6-7+ weeks earlier this year!

I just got a likely letter today! This is very exciting, I never thought I’d get one. It was postmarked February 1, which was the same day as my interview, strangely enough. I’m URM but the letter doesn’t mention that at all. Also, I submitted on the very last day and didn’t do any of the extra supplemental essays.

any chance of getting in if you didn’t get a likely letter? or are you pretty much bottom of the pile or rejected?
