Is there any correlation between Likely Letters and being invited to Robertson Scholars Weekend? Anyone who received a Likely Letter who applied or was nominated for the Robertson scholarship?

Those of you who received likely letters- what does it say in the letter? Also, why are these letters being sent out in early February?

My D got one; She is an Intel & Siemens Semifinalist + Excellent EC and Academics

My letter says āthe Admissions Committee fully expects to formally offer you admission later this springā. Opinions?

Did anyone in California get one of these letters? I am hoping it just is taking a long time to reach me

For folks who got likelies:

When did you send in your app?

Yes, Iām from a small, isolated city in far northern California. Also I donāt think I would expect one, it seems kind of rare.

That is the likely letter. Mine says the same thing.

January 1st.

"Greetings from Duke University! I am delighted to tell you that the Admissions Committee has reviewed your application, and we want to share with you the good news that you are one of a small group of particularly outstanding applicants to Duke this year, a signal accomplishment in a pool of over 29,500 applicants. Indeed, as long as you maintain the academic and personal standards reflected in your application, the Admissions Committee fully expects to formally offer you admission later in the spring.

We will be notifying all applicants of our decisions in early April. I trust that, as you think of your college choices, you will consider the exceptional opportunities Duke has to offer you, as a student, as a scholar, and as a member of an exceptionally vibrant and stimulating community."

Itās probably to entice applicants they especially want to attend Duke. Honestly, itās working, I feel much love and appreciation for Duke right now.

^Iām hoping the same thing. Only problem is that I live in NC, soā¦

Any of the likely people planning on visiting before April to make the decision easier then (as long as the likely turns into acceptance), or just waiting until Blue Devil Days? I guess it would be easier if you already knew it was your first choice.

-Sent in the app mid December. I donāt think that matters they were doing ED through half of December anyways, doesnāt RD really start in Jan?

I wasnāt really interested in it until I had this really good interview with an alumnus a week ago. And now, this. Iām planning on visiting before April, but I might go to Blue Devil Days.

iām applying next year EDā¦anyone know if they send likely letters then?

Yeah, Iām in California too. If nothing comes tomorrow, then Iām going to rule out hope, but I didnāt exactly think that I would get a likely letter anyway.

D received the likely letter. Weāre in California. Weāre crossing our fingers that there will also be a scholarship letter to follow. D sent in the app. shortly after Thanksgiving. She did not apply for the Robertson Scholarship (didnāt find out about it until it was too late), but the AB Duke Scholarship would be nice ;).

dignified, sorry your D didnāt hear about Robertson until too late. It sounds like a great program and significant $. Anyone else here apply for Robertson? Wonder if there is a correlation between likely letters and potential to receive the Robertson scholarship.

I applied for the Robertson Scholars Program, but I havenāt (yet) received a likely letter. Not sure if thatās any indication or notā¦

no letter for me today in sunny Californiaā¦guess I am going to the beach

^ Yeah same. Now for the long wait.

A Duke likely sure would have been nice especially since itās been my number one choice for a while. I got my hopes up a little to the idea of a Duke likely after receiving one from Dartmouth last week. Oh wellā¦ back to reality. Iām under the impression that the Robertson Scholar selection committee is completely separate from Duke admissions committeeā¦ is that correct? So the two wouldnāt necessarily correlate, right?

@lutherjw - i got a likely today and also applied for robertson. i think the scholarship committee works separately from admissions because their website says they notify semifinalists at the end of this month. so donāt lose hope yet!
@dignified1 - even if you didnāt explicitly apply for robertson they consider all duke applicants so it might not be too late :)

Yeah, itās just all very confusing to me. Iāve read (on this forum, actually) that getting a likely letter means you are not being considered for one of the merit scholarships at Duke (AB Duke, BN Duke, University Scholars, etc.). Iāve also read, however, that these likelies only go out to the top applicants, so it would seem that the people receiving the likely letters are MORE likely to be considered for merit scholarships.

I agree that the Robertson is probably completely separate, but it makes me wonder: if my stats/essays werenāt good enough to get a likely letter, how can they be good enough to move on in the Robertson competition?

I donāt understand the point in likely letters, anyway. It makes people like me paranoid. I guess I just worry too much. :)

My main problem is that there seems to be a lot of misinformation being spread around (probably by people who have no inside knowledge whatsoever), and I wish that Duke would be more open and transparent about their policies.
