The fact that he is from Canada or Nigeria or Pakistan has nothing to do with getting likely letter. Duke is after bright kids with bright potential. If one meets the criteria he/she would get likely letter and merit scholarship.

I have the same question as bigdreamer92. Do these Duke likely letters come in waves, or were they just sent out one time?

^In the past I believe they were only sent out once, though in March rather than February as they did this year.

Hey,
I just had my interview on thursday (2/10) even though the likely letters were sent out well before that. Is there a chance that I could still get one once my interview and midyear are processed, or is it just one wave?

If the past is any indication, no. Itâs generally all done in one batch.

This year, people received likelies without interviews and without MidYear Reports. The lack of those two items wouldnât be what prevented you from receiving a likely.

@pulice, D received her likely letter *after *her interview but *before *the mid-year report went out. I think they made their likely decisions based on the initial application.

My guidance counselor received a letter from Duke today, informing her that Duke received 29,000 applications and only had 1,100 spots left in the Class of 2015.

I already knew the stats, but hearing her say them out loud made me a little nervous! :D

So if I havenât received a likely letter, then am I basically rejected? Or am I just sort of âwaitlistedâ until April?

1,100 left?! :(

@TangentQueen: Thatâs technically the number of spots they have left. Theyâll admit much more than that, closer to 4,000, because their yield is so low (about 42%).

@OoovooO: That just means youâve got to wait until April. Likely letters go out to a very small percentage of admitted students.

Not sure why so surprised or sad, 1,100 spots left out of their normal freshman class enrollment of 1,665 is not unusual. Here are stats from their quick facts on website:

Like most years, they did about 500 Early Decision and the rest are RDâŠ
Of those, how many are âlikely lettersâ seems to be the questionâŠ

so if we didnât receive a likely letter, is it safe to assume we wonât be offered any merit scholarships? I would assume those would be reserved for top applicants, who apparently all got likely lettersâŠ

Is Duke still offering Duke UpClose to those who received likely letters (aka. flying us to Duke) or has that program been discontinued??

âso if we didnât receive a likely letter, is it safe to assume we wonât be offered any merit scholarships?â

I wouldnât assume that if I were you. My D received a likely letter, but there has been no word of an impending merit scholarship offer. I think they are totally separate entities. Unfortunately for us :(

well congrats on her letter! hopefully theyâll come through with scholarships for both of us :)

Has anyone who received a likely letter heard if you are a semi-finalist for an AB Duke scholarship? Please post if you hear - thanks.

My son just got likely today and the letter is dated on Feb. 21, 2011 (donât know why itâs significant late than other postersâ). By reading this thread I just found out there are Robinson and AB scholarship. Are those scholarship automatic or have to apply?

All applicants are considered for the merit scholarships, with no supplementary applications. There was an optional supplementary app for the Robertson, as it is administered by an outside organization.

The admissions committee forwards some applications to the scholarship office. They then decide on who to invite to Finalists Weekend for interviews. Those invites (for AB Duke, BN Duke, etc.) should be going out soon. BN Duke invites go out tomorrow; not sure about the others.

EDIT: Actually, looks like BN Duke invites already went out (yesterday, actually).

If my son didnât submit optional supplement, will he be still considered for Robinson? Or only be considered for other merit scholarships?

Short answer: yes.

Long answer: It depends on whether or not the adcom sent his application to the Robertson committee. The only way to guarantee being reviewed directly by the Robertson committee was to submit the supplementary application. Since your son didnât, he would have to be forwarded by the adcom to the Robertson committee.
