Does ED help?

Hi, I'm thinking about applying ED to Penn this fall, but how much does it help me? It is my number one choice so far. I'd say my chances are average at best for getting in (I'm not a shoo-in, but I think they'd take my app seriously). Would applying ED give me a better shot at getting in than Regular Decision would?

based on numbers, ED gives an applicant a better shot than RD.

Yes, since applying ED shows commitment, you have a slightly higher chance. A counselor at my school told me that 40% of Penn applicants who apply ED are accepted.

^ It's not 40%--about 29% of ED applicants are accepted ED:

Another 3% of those who apply ED are ultimately accepted in RD after having been deferred.

And that 29% includes many legacies, athletes, and other "hooked" applicants, so it's not necessarily 29% for the average applicant. You do increase your chances somewhat by applying ED, however, as Penn views it as a strong statement of preference for and commitment to the school.
