Hi!
I am a HS junior coming from a Catholic College Preparatory School in which academics are very serious and getting involved is key. I am not part of the party scene and am much more known for my student involvement and leadership. I REALLY am looking for a school that fits my personality of working hard and having a desire to strive as a well rounded person. I stumbled upon this website because I was looking for some insight about specific colleges and Elon is on my list.
Does Elon university carry students that have had an academically rigorous HS experience? Are students involved in other organizations besides Frats and Sororities? Would someone who is not a fan of the “party all nighters” thrive socially? ( I don’t need all of these questions answered but it would help to be reassured what Elon is under the surface.
If this is not a school that accepts non-partiers openly, what school does?
Thanks so much for anyone who can help. Much appreciated:)
You can pretty much assume that every single college/university will have some partiers and some non-partiers; what does change is the relative proportion of each. There are very few schools where a non-partier would not be able to find friends.
Elon is actively growing right now, and has been working to upgrade the academic strength of it’s student population- so much so, that a current senior I know says that she has seen the difference even in her 4 years there.
That said, that student (and the others that I know there) all came from very academic prep schools and have found the academics less challenging than their schools were. The upside is that they have great GPAs, the downside is that it has not been as intellectually interesting as they had anticipated. Note that none of the students were the most driven students in the first place.
The sorority thing is particularly strong in the early years- several juniors and seniors I know participate much less than they did when they started.
Long story short: based on your description, Elon wouldn’t have been the first place I would have guessed for you. Is Elon is the level of selectivity (ACT 25-29 / SAT 1700-1900) you are looking for? Does small, relatively rural, southern fit your other key variables?
Thank you so much for your help. I will definitely keep that in mind. I was drawn to it mostly because of their wide variety of study abroad opportunities and, of course, beautiful campus. I would still love to tour it but it will definitely move down my list. Thank you again
Pretty much all schools will have study abroad programs that they brag about. You might check out Dickinson, though, as a school that takes study abroad seriously. I’m sure others will chime in, but one Dickinson student that I know (getting significant need-based financial aid) has managed to get terms in Spain, Argentina and DC- and still had her major completed by the end of junior year.
WOW! thats great to hear. I will consider that school as well. Thank you for all your help.
