Does every school have this?

So I recently was accepted to my state flagship (Univ. of Missouri/Mizzou) and I got all this stuff about setting up an email account and stuff and it's as if the university has its own little facebook sort of thing. Do most schools (especially big ones I'm applying to: Michigan, North Carolina, etc.) have stuff like this (own email account, etc)? Just wondering

Yeah. I think every school I got into last year did that. Set up an email account for every school you get into and then when you make a decision, disable the other ones. There will usually be an email sent out later telling you how.

I just have the emails forwarded to my regular account.

^ Same. You can usually reroute them. My school’s email system is a pain in the ass.

Michigan has it’s own email system, and most schools do. Michigan does not have “its own little facebook thing.” I don’t know about other schools.

yep, they do.

the hell? ALL schools have emails for students, with the exception of very very very very very very few schools. basically, all schools have email. it’s like the most basic and effective way of communication. email is as fundamental as the key to your room. if your school doesn’t have email, you would deserve a full refund to transfer out.

-_- so thats how kids look at things now a days huh
i was under the impression that you had to have an email to sign up for facebook, not a facebook to know what email is

Mine has two.

Suck it.

rymd- yes, but the difference is that a lot of schools don’t allow non-students (ie prefrosh) to make email accounts like Mizzou does apparently.

OHHH he’s not attending the school yet

I don’t think I was allowed to make any email accounts until my deposits were paid, I was surprised that a school would do that.

My school, Texas A&M Univ-Kingsville does UPeers, its like a mini-facebook.

It’s not uncommon. As soon as I was accepted to some schools I got logins to setup my school email account. I was then emailed information regarding registration, payment, ect.

I think every college has their own email system, some just have different policies regarding their activation.

My first college didn’t have one, but it was a 2 year school. It sucked, I couldn’t get a facebook because back then you needed a college email. Certainly cemented the attitude that I was not /really/ a college student. haha

^^ Really BEB? Only 1 of the 10 schools I applied to had me set up/access an email account. And that was LSU, a giant state school like Mizzou (as the op was talking about how it was big schools that did this).

I had several accounts for some schools, but only LSU had an email account.

Ok I had a feeling that most (if not all) schools do this now. The facebook-esque thing is not related to the email directly my friend just had it before she went there two years ago and it gets you to get in touch with new classmates

Case Western gave me an e-mail account before I even got a decision.

The University of Maryland didn’t give me an e-mail, but they did have a little facebook-type application on their website for us to meet and get to know other accepted students. I think some of your are misinterpreting what the OP is talking about…

Yeah, UMD has some sort of Facebook knock-off but I never used it. We also get an email obviously, but you can have your default be whatever email you choose. So if you make it your Gmail address, then any emails sent to your class on Blackboard will go to Gmail.
