I think you’ve outlined the situation better than anything on this topic I’ve read so far. I’m puzzled by the vitriol toward this couple and the willingness to revere the British monarchy on the part of so many Americans.
I guess you’ve forgotten the cartoon with newborn Archie as a chimp. By a BBC host, no less. BBC host fired after comparing Meghan and Harry’s baby to a chimpanzee
Nor the estimated $10m left to him by the Queen Mother
In my experience, NDAs exist solely for the purpose of protecting the bad guys.
I find it absurd that the monarchy exists still but with that said, how does one brother get to inherit a billion pounds real estate portfolio and the other brother gets what 20-30 million pounds? Sure that’s a lot of money for the peasants but not for someone who needs security that costs about a 1-2million/yr. Denying that Harry is at risk for a kidnapping ransom situation is naive. Now he’s making money off telling weird stories about his family. Realistically, what are his options to generate that kind of money if not by selling his stories? It’s the only relevant thing he has. He’s high profile from birth and now he’s the son of a king. I find it all messy mostly by everyone involved’s own actions. I’ve got my popcorn and will passively watch some of the most privileged humans on earth squabble while feeling sad for the peasants who allow this mess to passionately take up space in their brains.
Do you think if she didn’t give permission they would have (could have?) gotten married at Windsor? I think she gave the okay for the marriage, in the chapel, with the full $30M day (and whatever Charles pitched in)
The tabloids didn’t clear up the story about Kate making Meghan cry nor did H/M clear up what they now say is the tabloids interpreting the skin color comments as racist when they didn’t intend to say the RF is racist.
Not without her permission.
Maybe they both cried!
I’ve always thought they both cried.
Watched Harry on Colbert last night as I always watch Colbert. Didn’t someone on here say they were doing shots? They didn’t do shots. They had a drink, just as Colbert did the night before with Tom Hanks. I wasn’t scandalized.
I was particularly interested in this interview because of the previous interview Colbert had done with Anderson Cooper about losing a parent as a child. If you’ve never seen it, check it out. So good. I hoped Colbert would go there with Harry, and he did in a way that was more interesting than other interviews I’ve seen. I haven’t watched the longer interview online, but what aired last night was interesting.
I don’t really have a desire to see read the book. Never planned to and nothing that’s transpired in the publicity for it has changed my mind.
I agree with Medea1 who said, “ I do wonder if tidbits look worse out of context.” Articles have appeared showing that to be true.
Here is some context for the frostbite story:
Context for Afghanistan combat:
I think Harry is way over sharing, but I have to say that would be an interesting NDA.
I see the conversation going something like this:
“No you can’t do part-time, so you’re fired. And I’m not giving you any extra money from my billions because you got more than enough from your dead mother who I drove away with my cheating and general terrible behavior.
Here’s an NDA I need you to sign. Let me summarize it for you. It basically says that in exchange for no compensation from me or the family business you promise the following:
Don’t talk about your creepy uncle Andrew
Don’t talk about your racist aunt Michael
Don’t talk about the time your brother physically assaulted you
Don’t talk about my affairs
Don’t talk about your stepmom whom I had the affair with
Don’t talk about how we insulted your wife
Don’t talk about how the company treated your wife
Don’t talk about any racism your wife experienced from company personnel
Don’t talk about how we wouldn’t let you work part time
Don’t talk about concerns for your family’s security
Don’t talk about me not being concerned for your family’s security
Don’t talk about how I’m not giving you any money
Really just don’t talk about anything related to your family or the business or racism at all
Oh but if you want to talk about your wiener that’s ok. I know that was traumatic.
Ok great thanks and see you at Christmas!”
BTW if it’s not obvious I’m only in this for the /humor
At one point there was a level of decorum that prevented public discussion of most of these things, which do not contribute to the public interest but which may be salacious enough to be interesting to the public.
I thought it would be pointless to bring this up here, so glad you did. I guess I’m just surprised that people so quickly form a mob mentality based on media snippets . We should know better.
Yep, he talked last night about how so much has been taken out of context. Again, I don’t care enough about it to buy the book and see the context for myself (or even click on those inks), but I tend to believe him.
My overall feeling is that he’s lived through a lot of trauma on a really public stage so I cut him some slack, even if some of his behavior isn’t my cup of tea. Oh, and one thing Colbert noticed is that this “liberation” started when he was 36, the same age Diana was when she died. I think he’s on to something there.
The additional context is helpful. But it doesn’t really help the situation, in my opinion. I think that it actually makes it sound a bit worse.
Yes, from the people who brought us “Meaghan is killing people because she eats avocados” or something of the sort, I am not surprised that they are taking bits and pieces out of context with the goal of discrediting him. Actually this makes me much more sympathetic to both of them. I have no doubt the same forces are at it again. They are the ones dragging Harry through mud, not the other way around.
Not convinced the context makes it any better. It’s still an overshare on one and a stupid and potentially dangerous disclosure on the second.
It’s an autobiography - why not include something bizarre like the frostbite?
Like, the point is over sharing - it’s the case in almost every autobiography I’ve ever read. Not sure why this is causing so much pearl clutching- just seems a bit dramatic.
