im guessing that a lot of you took the sat when you were a junior and again when you were a senior-did you guys improve a lot? im a junior and im about to take the sat. a bunch of people tell me not to stress it as its more of a practice sat for when i take it as a senior. should i take the sat twice-once as a junior and again as a junior? im getting somewhere between a 2000 and a 2100. when you all took your first sat's, what were your first grades? am i off to a good start, or am i stuck? i want to get into harvard but i dont think that my scores are good enough as is. also how about the act? thanks for your assistence!

I don't know about the sat, cuz I only took it once. But i took the act as a junior and got a 28. And when i took it as a senior, i got a 35. So i improved a lot. Or, that could just be luck.

You're just starting your junior year. Wait until the end of the year and take another practice test with the official SAT study guide and then see what your score is. I bet It'll be 2100+ for sure by then. Don't waste money taking the SAT if you KNOW that you can improve your score. If you still want to score higher, just prepare over the summer and take it in October of your senior year.

junior year march sat -> 2210
senior year october sat -> 2340

but in all fairness i didnt prep for either one, i was just pretty sick the first time around

Mine went down 170 points (new scale) and 110 points on the old scale. But, the second time I was on some strong medicine which hindered test performance.

i improved 50 pts from march to nov
i guess that was expected that i should be smarter from school and such

It's all over the map with retakes...up, down, or about the same. Take them until you feel you've reached your personal best. Son improved 5 composite points on the ACT retake and felt he had hit his peak so that was enough for him. BTW, both taken when he was a 2nd semester junior. Great to have that out of the way before senior year if you plan on applying to schools with rolling admissions.

my composite increased by 70 points the second time around w/o prepping. just luck i guess

I took my 1st SAT in March 2005 (junior year) & 2nd SAT in Oct. 2005 (senior). My verbal & essay scores increased, but on a pretty small scale. My math and writing scores decreased, also on a pretty small scale. Overall, my SAT scores pretty much remained the same.

May 2005 --> 2070
Nov 2005 --> 2310

Big spike.

10th grade: 1410
11th grade: 1540
11th summer: 2270
combined: 2340

April 2005 -- ACT 31
October 2005 -- ACT 33

I think improvement on second or third testings may also depend on familiarity of the subject. I know that when I first took the ACT, I got above 30 on everything except for science. Then, at my second testing, a lot of the science questions were about topics that had been addressed in my physics class, so it was much easier for me to understand the technical terms that previously confused me. On that test, I got a 35 on the science section.

In the same manner, improvement could also tie into the amount of prep you do before the second one.
