I keep hearing that employers will check up your facebook or myspace after reviewing your resume. Is this rumor true that i'm hearing? Would be an advantage or disadvantage since you can make yourself more employable and sell yourself through the media rather having dirty pictures and comments on FB or Myspace.

Oh, and does having a photo of yourself in a resume help?

I wouldn't put a picture of myself on a resume unless you're going for an acting job or something.

The only way I see facebook or myspace hurting is if you have some pretty non-professional pictures on there or a lot of inappropriate comments. My old roommate was actually googled by an employer that interviewed him and they found his cafepress store, his blog, and a comic he wrote for fun. The dude interviewing him thought all of the stuff was funny, and actually started off the interview by referencing a joke from the blog. Roommate was dumbfounded at first because he couldn't believe someone was actually reading it, haha. Roommate was a computer engineer, so those sorts of soft skills really had nothing to do with his abilities on the job he was interviewing for, but it certainly broke the ice.

That's why you set your profile to private.

...and don't accept friends you don't know.

Definitely don't use a X-rated or R-rated picture as your profile image.

Don't include any indecent or inappropriate comments on your page either.
