Does financial aid fully cover housing expenses?

My EFC is 0, and I am planning to attend a UC I was wondering if financial aid pays for housing? and if so, does it depend on the cost?

For example, Single rooms and more expensive than doubles and triples.

Would they still pay for those though?

Also do you still have money left over?

UCI has an established Cost of Attendance. The COA for room AND board is $11,400.00.

That looks like it covers the double size rooms with 100 meals per quarter.

You will not really have money “left over” because your aid package will include student loans and work-study. Probably at least $7500 of your aid package will be loans (5500) and work-study (2000). If they add a Perkins loan, the loans may be for more.

I’m guessing that your family income is under $70k because you have a 0 EFC.

Financial aid does not actually “pay for housing.” Here is how it works: When you indicate on your FAFSA that you plan to live on campus, the financial aid package that the school awards you will be based on a budget (COA, or Cost of Attendance) for a student who lives on campus. If your EFC is 0 (and remains so after verification, should you be selected for verification), you will receive a Pell grant. This year, the Pell grant for a 0 EFC is $5550. As a freshman, you are eligible for $5500 in Stafford loans; with a 0 EFC, $3500 will probably be in the form of a subsidized loan & $2000 will be an unsubsidized loan. Assuming you take at least 12 credits per semester, you would be assured of $5550+$5500 in financial aid. This totals $11,050. It is possible that you might be offered other grants, but it is important to file your FAFSA as close to January 1 as possible in order to qualify for the best possible aid package (and be sure to submit any and all paperwork necessary in a timely manner). Remember that you will need money for books & personal expenses in addition to covering tuition, fees, room, and board costs.

Thanks so much for your answers. They really helped.

If you qualify for cal grants and blue and gold along with pell, you will have enough with student loan and work study to cover nearly all costs.

I’m pretty sure i’ll qualify for blue and gold. Thanks so much for the help.

Here’s an example from last year of the UCI aid package from another 0 EFC instate student.

Academic Competitiveness Grant for First Year $750.00
CAL A FLIP $10,302.00
Federal Pell Grant (01) $5,550.00
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant $500.00
UC Irvine Grant $3,060.00 Accepted
Total Gift Aid $20,162.00

Student Work-Study
Federal Work Study $2,000.00
Total Work Study $2,000.00

Loans

Federal Direct Subsidized Loan to meet need $3,500.00
Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan to meet need $403.00
Federal Perkins Loan $2,000.00
Total Loans $5,903.00
Total Aid in My Aid Award $28,065.00

ACG may not be available after this year, but I imagine that UCI will increase something else to cover that amount.

No ACG after this year (or SMART).

Great! Thanks so much. I understand so much better now, you both have been very helpful. Thanks so much!!!
