Does financial aid hurt your chances??

I maybe an OldFart, but it’s oldfort.:)

Okay thanks very much!

About the Canadian thing… the website is so unclear about its policy. It still says that Canadians are considered the same way as Americans, but it also says it merged the funds…

Unfortunately, it turned out that I cant even apply for fin-aid because my parents are in Korea and I cannot fill in the documents by myself…

Shame.

Aww… are you applying RD? Can you ask them to fill in the CSS-profile stuff and ask them to mail the signed form? lol

Hm, they aren’t even downloading CSS profiles until towards the end of November… my guess is that they’ll already have made a lot of their decisions by then, and therefore, would be unable to look at your FA with any bias upon whether or not you get in o_O

I heard that it hurts to be in the highest income bracket. This seems patently false to me, though… It doesn’t hurt or help, right?

When you are in the highest income bracket, you can’t appear to be spoiled or entitled on your application. They want you to pay, but they don’t like spoiled kids. There is a delicate balance.

^
Will I look spoiled if I took a bunch of classes that required you to pay?

I mean, I go to a public high school and live in a middle to upper middle class city. Even though I meet the definition of “wealthy”, I really don’t live that lifestyle…

It is customary to pay for classes. But by listing “volunteer” work in Costa Rica which parents paid for, or internship at a firm clearly through connection as your EC is not as impressive.

Wait… hold on, wisdom86…

if they’re downloading the files on the 29th, that means internationals will be need-blind too, unless they do internationals afterwards.

Or does Cornell actually accept internationals need-blind but provide bad FA? lol

I don’t believe FA for internationals is ever need blind. They have a separate pool of money for internationals now (same pool as for Canadians and Mexicans), but the pool is definitely much smaller than for US citizens.

Yeah… so that means they make their decisions for internationals after Nov. 25 (after they download CSS profile)

Cornell definitely is not need blind for internationals… It might be different if you’re a US citizen I’m not sure though.

@tty8

Their website said something about them offering FA for internationals, however they have limited funds; it used to only be offered to Canadians, however this year or last year they extended the same amount of funds to be divided among all international applicants… It’s not need blind, but if you’re a US citizen (with dual citizenship or something), you don’t file for international aid, the site directs you to the US FA app o-o

They claim to be need-blind for US citizens.

Also, I’m pretty sure it’s not the 29th that they’re downloading them, since they’ve already downloaded them… As of earlier this week I believe o_o

so it’s the 25th, but that still means that they’ll be making decisions after 25th if Cornell is need-aware for internationals

And now that internationals get to apply ED, it’s hard to tell how ED will affect one’s chances…

Yea, I think they’re still making decisions… I just had my interview today T_T I think the cut off date for interviews was the end of this week though, or that’s the impression I got from my interviewer… so perhaps that might bean indicator of when they’re making final decisions.

ED is weird this year, however, I heard a smaller pool of people applied ED this year. idk how that will affect us =</p>

Higher acceptance rate? :P

^I was thinking that you could try to find out whether you’re in or not earlier if you deliberately “forget” to send something in to FA. So if you’re in, then the FA would contact you lol

I’m not sure if that works or not lol It seems really risky and I bet other people would’ve thought of that too.

Maybe a smaller pool applied ED because of the recession. And I have no clue how the international EDers will factor in…

Well, the recession was worse last year and more people applied last year.
