Does freshman year count during grad school evaluation?

I'm actually asking for a friend who doesn't have an account.

He did so terribly bad during his freshman first semester. He's worried that his GPA might drag him down. He's aiming for grad school in biotech.

I’m sure it matters, though on the other hand, I’m sure that the junior and senior years are more important. Exactly how badly did it damage his GPA? If he still has a high upper division GPA, or high major GPA, he might have a shot.

Yes, but it doesn’t matter as much as the sophomore and junior years. A lot of grad programs are more interested in the GPA of your last 60 credits or your major GPA. It will hurt him a lot, however, if a lot of his major classes and/or the ones related to biotech were taken during his freshman year and he got poor grades.
