If my daughter chooses Fsu, just wondering if it’s worth trying.
She has been offered the freshman scholarship and OOS waiver. Will they stack outside ones with these?
Yes - the freshman scholarship and OOS waiver are merit based. Plus FSU isn’t gonna be like “you earned this money on your own from an outside organization? Nope you don’t get it”
@pg96fsu I thought they could reduce any aid they give you if you have outside scholarships? Not necessarily FSU, but some colleges. Are you saying none of them do this? That is not the impression I got.
My understanding is that merit scholarships arent affected by any outside money received. I asked financial aid if the results of my FAFSA could reduce my kid’s out of state tuition waiver or freshman scholarship, and they said no. I think you can be a billionaire and it wont reduce your merit awards. As the other poster said, OOS waiver and freshman scholarship are both merit based so you should be fine.
My general understanding is the same as playacar. If it is merit based then it will stack with outside scholarships. Although this may effect what you receive for need based FA, because they will deduct your outside scholarships.
Merit based aid has nothing to do with needs. OOS and Freshman are based on test scores/GPA. Now, needs based grants can definitely be affected by other scholarships, but OOS and Freshman are safe.
Ahhh, good to know. Thanks everybody!

So to clarify, this could impact the federal loans? For example she has some colleges offering the full $5500 federal loan as all UN-subsidized. If a college offers some subsidized and some unsubsidized, does it impact the subsidized portion. To my understanding subsidized is need based. I’m not sure I’m totally clear on that though.
I believe each school views this differently. So best to ask.
Call the financial aid office and ask
Ok, thanks again.
