Today I made a stupid decision that I regret, I stole another students lunch and ate it. I was suspended for one day. Does this go on my record? Could i go to jail? Will it effect my college choices and admissions? I am 17.
17 year old kids sometimes do stupid stuff. You aren’t the first, and sadly won’t be the last.
Glad to hear you regret it, and honestly, that you were appropriately punished for it. Presumably you will be apologizing to the other student and making restitution.
If so, I don’t think this will have a serious impact on your college choices and admissions - although you might consider taking West Point or the military academies off of your list.
If this has been forwarded to the School Resource Officer (aka the cops) you might have a harder time of it - some states/schools have much lower tolerance than others, and send issues to juvenile court. Sadly, these are often disproportionately affecting male students, and students of color.
Where are you considering applying?
Yes, if does. Your counselor puts everything in your letters of rec. They will see all discipline and this certainly will be a pretty big strike against you considering that you are competing against people with clean records. It also may indicate that you aren’t mature. You stole someone’s lunch? Really?
I payed Restitution the same day, and payed a significantly higher amount back. And mostly in state schools such as NC State, App and others
No you probably won’t go to jail. Not unless they press charges, of course. You might be looking at life for felony robbery.
(Obviously I’m kidding)
And what may affect your getting into college is the wrong use of “effect”, when you should have used “affect”.
Sorry to be the grammar police when you’re already having a bad day - this is meant to add a splash of levity to your day - I know a comment like this will invite others to scrutinize all of my messages for typos.
Is there any way to have this taken off my record? Community Service, Good Behavior?
If you are otherwise a good kid, and depending on your school, sometimes details of stuff like this does not find its way into the GC letters of rec. More often it won’t, especially if your GC is overworked, and this isn’t indicative of a pattern of bad behavior.
Mistakes happen. Not the end of the world.
You’d have to ask your school about that; policies differ.
Personally…lunches got stolen at my high school all the time. I wouldn’t think it’s a horrible offense. Annoying and wrong, yes, but not on the level of others I’ve read about on here!
No. You got suspended. It’s part of your record. You can’t hide it. You can be an angel from now on and it will still be there. Think before you act.
Each HS has its own policies. You should talk with your guidance counselor to see what your school’s policy is, and to see if there’s anything you can do to improve the situation.
One other thing; it’s paid, not payed.
Thank you guys! Is there anything else you recommend I try or should do to try to fix this?
You should consider what prompted your behavior in the first place, so you don’t do something this foolish again. I presume it wasn’t because you were hungry.
Was it a crime of violence?
