Does Harvard have any casual debate society similar to the Yale Political Union or the American Whig-Clio Society at Princeton? I would like to participate in something like that next year, but I can't seem to find any casual in-college debating/political group under the student organizations.

We have a debate TEAM, but it’s very intense and involves a ton of work and travelling. If you’re looking for something low-commitment and not that intense, I haven’t heard of anything (I’m a junior here). Maybe someone else will have.

Thanks for the help! Another student told me that the Harvard Political Union in the Institute of Politics is kind of close to what I’m thinking about, but I get the impression that it’s pretty small and a bit different from the tradiitonal debate societies at other schools.

The HPU does casual debates, since they’re pretty irregular. Every so often they’re like “here are two members of the College Republicans and College Democrats debating an issue of the day!” (Never their own members debating, as far as I can tell; they just organize it.) The only one I heard about this semester was then cancelled, I don’t remember why. Maybe they do more stuff, but that’s the extent to which I’ve heard about them.
