I have a YouTube channel with over 13,000 subscribers, 1.3 million views, and 100 videos. Over the course of a few years, I have also earned a few thousand dollars.
Would this count as an extracurricular? If so, would it be advisable to mention it on applications for elite colleges?
Although I have seen people say that it counts, what worries me is that it may come across as childish — something that top colleges won’t really value. What worries me more is that the channel is about video games.
The only way I think I can refrain from portraying my self as a lazy, video-game fanatic (which I am not), is by mentioning the money I have earned. This, I think, would make it seem more like a part-time job than a frivolous hobby.
What are your thoughts?
Keep in mind that if you mention your channel in your application, it officially becomes a part of that picture you’re trying to paint for admissions officers. Is this a channel in which you discuss politics with a roundtable of experts, or review technological innovations? Or is it a LetsPlay compilation of you playing Xbox all day long while wearing inderwear on your head?
My opinion is that it sounds like it’s something your are passionate about. It’s something that takes up your time outside of the classroom. As long as it’s not offensive, who cares if it sounds “childish”. I think colleges want diversity in their class. If this is who you are, then present it that way. Don’t be phony. It takes all kinds to make up a diverse, well-rounded class.
I think if you present it in the right way, as a worthwhile hobby you dedicate time and energy to, colleges would want to see that.
I get where you’re coming from. It’s a tough call, but it depends on how you present yourself on said channel. Either way, it certainly sounds like an accomplishment.
Yes, it’s an EC and you’ll be far from the first to have done this. It’s not childish, it’s just not a tip. More, an aspect of who you are, what you do. The question about including the $ is harder. Some kids think a higher amount makes them worthier. Try to remember the elites want to see the personal qualities they value.
Depends on what’s on your channel. If you swear in all your videos, it will hurt your app if you put it on there. If not put the channel on your app. It’s up to your judgement.
