I currently go to community college as a biochemistry major and my GPA is 3.4. My goal is to get into a UC like UCLA. I am also interested in applying to Pepperdine and USC. I was wondering if having a patent would increase my chances of being admitted? I have two scientific patents filed on electrostimulation therapy and a body stretching apparatus (used for medical purposes). FYI: my patents are not pending, it’s filed and done
Are you sure you have actual patents, or just patent pending? Actual patents can take years to get, plus a lot of money. Patent pending is just filing paper work so you have a filing date should someone come along at a later dare and claim your idea/invention as theirs.
Filing the proper paper work still takes a lot of time and money, but it’s not exactly the same thing.
Nope not pending. It’s filed and done
What does filed and done mean? Was it granted? Is it a design patent? How many names are on the patent?
It’s granted. One has 2 names the other 4
Seems like it should be a positive then. But I wanted to share that my kid was not admitted to USC (she’s a legacy too) and has a couple of patents in her name.
it would be a positive but, is more likely to help at a private school. UCs are VERY GPA focused.
If you have an actual patent, then I’d definitely include this in your application, with the actual name and patent numbers assigned to your idea, your involvement/role in getting it issued, etc.
I’m curious how you got a patent through the system so quickly, while at CC? It took me 4 years, and a lot of money to attain my design patent. This was 13 years ago, so maybe they’ve sped things up, but way back then it typically to 18 months from filing date to actual acceptance or denial of claims. It was like trudging thru quicksand dealing with the PTO office, and that was with the help of a Patent Attorney.
