At my school it was very difficult for students taking mostly AP classes to get into UF, but the vast majority of IB kids were accepted. However, if your school doesn't offer IB and you taking all/mostly APs you should be fine. IB is VERY time-consuming and requires a lot of BSing, but it really helped me with time-management skills and I loved the other kids in it. I haven't started college yet, so I'm not sure how much it will help, but according to people who graduated the year before me, it helps a lot. hope that helps! ;)

humm
i'm in ib
my gpa is 3.6 or so unweighted
sat score: 1260 but i should make it up to a 1300 with the last SAT
hope i get it in..

surprisingly this year at my school quite a few ib grads didn't get into UF, whereas 2 years ago if you were in ib you were basically guarenteed a spot.. eek i guess they're getting tighter restrictions with all these national championships..blahh doesn't help me too much =(

anyway in the debate of ap vs ib, ib is way harder, no doubt about it.. i took ap in 9th grade and it is nothing like ib. not to mention ib includes a huge variety of side stuff besides just rigorous classes.. (aka TOK, extended essay, CAS hours, ib testing, internal assessments, group 4 etccc)

I heard that they have stopped just accepting all IB students. They still accept a lot but are cutting back because most other school know that they are basicaly paying the kids to go there or something like that.

It was in an article about the schools rank and how they were working to improve it.

The private high school in my area is instituting a new IB program this coming year. Previously, it has only offered AP. The local (top 300 in US) public high school here offers a lot of AP classes and no IB. Do you guys think that it that the IB program is really a superior education over a full AP menu? Didn't I read somewhere that IB is really geared toward the strong English/Social Studies student as opposed to the Math/Science student? Just wondering, since I have one child going into 8th grade...we are debating the best place for him to attend high school (good AP's at local public hs vs. limited AP but newly instigated IB in private high school). He is a math/science type of kid and is weak in the English dept.

I prefer IB because it is a whole program. Not only do you take all the classes but you have projects that will put you with kids from different classes. There is a large service requirement. There are other required classes that you have to take (a philosophy course called theory of knowledge).

IB HL Math is the hardest high school math course in the country, hands down. They do calc AB and BC in the junior year of highschool then go way beyond that in the senior year. IB chem HL is an extremely hard course.

IB courses also go a lot more in depth. For instance I took ap music theory my sophomore year. It was a very dry class based solely on music theory. I took IB music the next two years. It goes much more into music history, analysis of compositions, and research of the cultures where music comes from.

If nothing else, IB is more fun...

I'd say go for the IB course, it is more challenging. Taking IB shows colleges you apply to that you are challenging yourself to a course of study that is very intensive.

IB is more challenging than AP because it is a Program, AP is just a type of class. While some AP classes are on the same difficulty level as IB counterparts, none compare to the difficulty of IB HL courses. Most IB students take three 2 year HL courses. And when you take IB you are devoted to IB and must do all the things that come with it (EE, IA's, CAS, TOK).

To me, the AP vs. IB debate is minimally debatable, IB is harder.

i agree with mystifire

go with IB, yes its a HELL of a lot more challenging, but if you're lazy and you're and average student, theres absolutely no way you'll last even a week. as long as you're naturally gifted and hardworking you can pull it off, you just have to sacrifice some of your free time..

and the math/science vs english/hist hard to say.. it really depends on what classes your taking.. because for math and science you have options, so you can pick an easier math class but your english and history are always the same

Are you in Broward County?

I don't know guys, as I said before, I thought the AP exams were a lot more difficult than IB. I thought the IB exams were very straightforward.

My s was a math/science oriented kid in an established IB program and I have a different take on this. He had to dual enroll in math classes after finishing IB HL math. This was very difficult logistically with all the other IB hoops to jump through and put an undue burden on him. He also self-studied several APs to gain science credits (such as calc based physics) that were lacking from the curriculum or wouldn't fit in with the rest of the IB schedule.
Giving the math/science oriented student no option of a slightly less challenging english or history course also presents a GPA risk that the more verbally-oriented students in IB never face )since they can opt for easier math/science options to shield their "weakness").
There are many advantages to the IB program, but I'm not convinced it is always the best option for the heavily math/science oriented kid.
I would be especially concerned about a new program as it takes many years to get an IB program fully established. Be sure to ask what math and science courses are projected for your child's junior and senior years.

wow what AP exams were you taking GatorEng....

i took AP bio, AP psych and AP lang
and i took IB bio and IB psych
and the ap exams were an absolute breeze for me, i finished with over 30 min left..

I got 39 points on the IB exams when only 24 pts were needed for the diploma. I did well on my AP exams, but I thought they were harder. I took AP Calc BC (5), AP Lit (4), AP Spanish (3 versus the 6 I got on the IB exam), and AP Econ (4 versus IB 6, which I guess is comparable, but I thought the AP econ was a lot harder). Not to mention that I had to take the IB econ exam the day after my graduation ceremony, so I studied about 1 hour before the exam in the morning and took it. Contrast that to the 3 days of studying I did for the AP exam and got a similar score. AP > IB imo.

"Are you in Broward County?"

Yes, we are in Broward County.

where did you get those highschool stats? i want to check mine

gatoreng
ib > ap
ap is just taking a couple "advanced" classes here and there
ib is a whole program devoted to intellectual fulfillment

It was published in Newsweek:

Our public high school was rated 207 for 2007.

IB is a whole program devoted to intellectual fulfillment? lol, you have a very romantic view of the program. It's not that great. Again, I didn't think much of it, the exams were very straightforward. I guess we have to agree to disagree.

thanks for the link
my high school is 239th

GatorEng, you're in AP and i'm in IB, you want to prove that AP is better than IB and i'm going to assume the contrary. so yes, lets just agree to disagree. you can say all you want but ib IS a whole program that promotes a well-rounded individual in other areas besides just academics.

Alex, are you listening to yourself? I did IB, what EXACTLY does IB promote? You can take ALL AP classes and probably get a better education than all IB classes. The IB exams are stupid and VERY poorly designed like IB Math HL has like 3 Papers on different days. I completely agree with GatorEng, IB is a waste of time. Gator was trying to be nice, you sound like some sort of brain-washed IB zealot. IB is where kids try to go to distinguish themselves, and it kind of helps, but on the whole AP is better.

Also, and as far as more than academics...it's an ACADEMIC program, so I don't know what you mean there at all. Does it promote uhh....respect? Athleticism? I don't think so lol?
