Does interning and shadowing a doctor count as extra curriculars??

On the collegeboard website it says the nyu looks at extra curriculars strongly but not as much to volunteer work. I have 200 hours of interning at a clinic over the summer. In going to have 200+ hours shadowing a doctor. And going to have 200+ hours tutoring middle schoolers. I believed that I would get a lot lore out of these positions than anything that was offered in my school. Will these count the same as clubs in my school? I only did 2 clubs in school: Interact club and equality club. Also I did varsity cross country. Freshman. and sophomore years. Will my hours shadowing interning and tutor even matter in the application then compared to the people with immense amount of clubs in high school?

quality over quantity. “immense amt of clubs in HS” Seen it before over and over again. Laundry list of clubs is meaningless.

List your stuff and be proud of it. Don’t worry about the resume padders

Good advice, T26E4. It sounds reasonable to address it as an EC. You can explain in your essays.

You did some great things–the volunteer work, the interning. Be proud of that. Don’t worry about fitting your work into little boxes to check off on an application. Life is so much bigger than that. Don’t think in narrow definitions. Of course they will love you for what you have done. Stop worrying and nit-picking!

“200+ hours” seems like a lot of shadowing a doctor. I find it surprising you didn’t reach a point of diminishing returns, and that the doctor didn’t get tired of having a shadow.

Two hundred hours of interning at a clinic is great if you can say what you contributed to the clinic or what you gained from the experience. If you can’t do that, then it’s just one item on your list.

Humorous portrayal of HS resume padder:

Thanks for the link… funny stuff!

200+ of interening is very good to have. But as Sikorksy said, how in teh world did you get 200+ hours shadowing a doctor? You’d basically just stand around all day and watching the doctor. Some adcoms might think all those hours are for padding your resume! I know many pre-meds don’t even have that many hours of shadowing. However, the interning is very redeeming because you’d actually get involved and be helping the patients.

Don’t get a laundry list. Just stick a few respectable ECs and do them long term.

Good luck and don’t make a laundry list. Just stick a few respectable ECs and do them long term.

Sikorsky: the doctor I’m shadowing likes having a shadow I think and likes teaching me about his work.

For the interning the physician made me do paperwork and help her with patients.

T26E4: thanks I will be sure to do that. But do you think these Ecs will be good for nyu?
