Syracuse University is coming near my region, and I have already register. Does interviews increases your chances of getting in to a college? By the way, I don't know what to expect, I never been in an interview, even for jobs.

Interviews do not necessary increase your chance, most of those interviews are informational. That being said, for showing up for presentation/interview you are showing interest and for some schools it matters.

I think it makes a difference on the margin - but in either direction. But if you are going to interview - you will need to be somewhat prepared. Look on the web or get a book out of the library that will help you know what to expect. For example, a common question is simply “Tell me about yourself” and they do not want to hear a chronological account of your life. Think about the 3 things you want to make sure that individual knows about you and make sure you have a chance to tell them in the interview. If they don’t ask an open ended question then be sure to provide a good “summary” before you leave.

Practice at a few schools that aren’t high-interest for you at this point. Get real interviewing experience.

Interviews do help improve your admissions chances at some schools. However, the main reason they help is, they give a fuller picture to the admissions officer of who you really are. It is yet another chance to show a little bit about who you are and why you’d love to be on their campus.

Generally speaking, the smaller and more elite the school, the more important the interview can be. Not always true, but interviews rarely matter at huge schools, LACs like to see your smiling face.

Here’s a long thread. Trawl through it – I’m sure you’ll pick up some pointers:

if the interview is BAD, it will not help your chances (and probably not hurt them too much either, unless it was like atrocious)

It won’t get you into a school where your grades/standardized tests don’t fit. But it might help you if you are on the edge and it is always good to show interest in the college.
