Does Intro to Engineering help?

Will attending the camp this summer help my application? Anyone know how competitive admissions are?

1) Heck Ya

2) The admissions are not competitive beyond being able to pay. trust me. If your GPA is >= 3.0 you will pretty much get in for sure.

Bump for clarification. I didn't even know about these summer programs back when I applied, so I know little about them, but I thought they were decently competitive. Anyone know for sure? I am not sure if my memory is wrong on this! Thanks

As for if it will help...I have known people that have gone to them that haven't gotten in, but that being said I don't think it can hurt. I don't think it will help all that much honestly, but that is just my feeling on it. I don't know much about the program so I am bumping for more opinions on this. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Admissions openly states that attending these has absolutely no bearing on admission.

They say that, but it is not true. Professors and the RA's now have a personality and a face to attach to an application. This is a huge benifit because it will help ND know who you really are.

I see your point Ice but I still don't think it helps you much just because, unlike some graduate programs, it really isn't the professors who make admissions decisions. If you were to impress a professor so much that they wrote a recommendation letter on your behalf then yes, it could help, but I don't think it will make too much of a difference. It may show that you are interested in ND, but then again your application shows that as well. I wish I could tell you that it helped you a great deal but I just don't think it does.

That being said, it greatly helps YOU with your college choice. You get to see a bit of Notre Dame life and possibly can see if it is going to be for you or not. Also, you can get the experience of working with some of the best professors in America, and that is really cool (can you tell I am a nerd).

I think it will greatly benefit you as a person as it will help you get ready for college, it will help you learn something, and it may help you make your college choice. Knowing ND's admissions, however, I doubt it will help you get in. Then again, if it makes you fall in love with ND and it makes you work just that much harder to get to ND...then I guess it helps you get in indirectly.

Good luck to everyone. I don't mean to discourage the summer programs as I think they are good programs; just don't count on them for admissions.

Thanks for the replies. I plan to apply, regardless of whether or not it helps my application... if it did help, that would just be a bonus.

Glad to hear. It really can't hurt your chances (unless you break all the rules or something, lol) so you may as well give it a go. Good luck on that and I hope you enjoy the summer program!

can't burt you to attend, like irish has said. If anything it might give you some good insights into whether Engineering is something you want to do at college or not. I say this because my freshman year roomate was an engineer, and I know a lot of other ones. The one engineering class he took freshman year is a "interdisciplinary" course called Intro to Engineering...it gave exposure to the different fields. It was a required course...might have vanished in the curriculum shake-up of the past two years. My point is that this class coupled with the calc requirements helped weed-out a lot of would-be engineers who decided it wasn't the major for them.

So enjoy the program, it can't hurt you. But then again I don't know how much it helps. I ran into a friend of an ex-gf at a different college, turns out she did one of ND's summer programs, but didn't get in. I know others at ND who did one or another of the programs.

Hope this helps...
