Does it benefit me to superscore the SAT? Do they really only look at the highest for each section?

This is my first post. I am wondering if anyone has any insights on whether schools (particularly UF) truly only look at the best sections of each test.

I ask because my son recently improved his SAT score by 150 points and I am tempted to only send the scores on the better test, even though superscoring would theoretically raise his score by 10 points. His first attempt was so bad (other than the writing score, which was actually better the first time) that I’m not sure I’d want them to see it.

I honestly hesitate because of the first reading score. I do realize that by sending both scores, he will break 2000 with the superscore and he would not without it. But with a difference of only 10 points (1990 vs 2000 with superscores,) I’m not sure if sending both would hurt me more than it would help me. Both scores are listed below.

His GPA is 3.9 unweighted and 6.5 weighted. He’s in a competitive IB school with a class rank of 4 out of 160. He will have over 350 community service hours with decent extracurriculars. Any insights would be much appreciated. Thanks

SAT Test One R 540 M 650 W 650

UF does superscore (can’t speak for any other schools). Send both test to UF. In fact, when you check ISIS (or whatever they will be re-naming the system…) you will see both test scores and then your final superscore (if I remember correctly). All they consider in admissions is the final superscore.

Looks like your son is doing great! He may want to take the test one more time, especially if he’s interested in the honors program. Otherwise his GPA/Class Rigor/Test scores are fine.

Good Luck!

Thank you so much for your reply. I was just worried that the 150 point difference between the two scores would maybe raise a flag. So I guess they really just care about the best across the board for each section and won’t be concerned about the large difference between the two? On the first attempt, I think he just winged it. The second time, he had studied and took it a little more seriously. I agree with you about taking it again. I’d like to see if a third time would be the charm. Thanks again.

Oh I don’t think the 150 point difference matters. I was accepted and I went from a 630 to a 780 in writing from 1 test to the next (I sent both sets of scores).

I agree with @Gator88NE‌. The minimum SAT to get invited to the honors college is 2070 so might as well try it again because GPA wise he is great! But if he doesn’t get that, don’t fret- he can always petition to get in.
