I'm currently a freshman taking ECE15, Math20B, Chem6A, and MUS15. The workload I'm getting is about all i can probably do to maintain a good GPA. I'm wondering if it gets any easier as college goes along or should i change into an easier major. (I never had any experience programming so ECE probably takes more time on me than others, but i dont need to worry about programming much after this quarter)

From my experience I feel like most upper division classes require less busy work in terms of weekly homework and quizzes and stuff. So in that sense yes it gets easier. The material will be more complicated and more dense. They just expect you to know the material for the midterms / projects / finals. Of course it varies from class to class and major to major.

I think as you start taking more and more major courses you will probably become more immersed and the time you spend at it wont really matter that much.

Also, your ability to study improves as you move forward. You begin to understand what the important take aways are from the class material based on what the professor says in class / what you read in the back. Your studying will become more efficient. I got some low grades in intro courses but then got the hang of things and did way better in more advanced courses.

It does NOT get easier, trust me. Your study habits and absorbing information skills will get much better but chem 6a is nothing compared to upper divs. 20b was fairly simple imo and any lower div music classes are doable. As for changing major, if you really want to change because of a few challenging classes, go for it. Just make sure it’s all worth it in the end.

Well this is my only chem course and it is relatively simple to me, there is just a lot of tedious work. I just prefer to graduate in 4 years and it might be difficult with all the requirements for engineers

I apologize, but i probably should have said that i’ll be continuing the Math20 series and beginning the phys2 series. Mus15 was just a class to take for GEs so i won’t really continue that after. ECE however is the main class i would like to know about the difficulty/workload however

Okay the replies who say it gets easier, I have no idea what they’re talking about. Freshman year for me was an absolute breeze compared to sophomore year when I started taking upper division classes. You can’t get easier than GEs and lower divs, you just can’t. Upper divs require less busy work/quizzes but more REAL work, making them wayyyyy more stressful (from my experience)

It pretty much won’t be getting easier. If you don’t want to be in the major, switch out now. If you really do, then suck it up. That applies to anybody in any major.

I’m also an engineering freshman, and am math 20c, chem 6a, usp 1, mus 95l, mus 95b, mus 143 and am also kind of overwhelmed and having a hard time with math, does math get any better, b/c I hear the other 20s get better, and i hate chem, so do i still belong in engineering if the lower classes are getting the better of me?

It seems like you have a bunch of classes, that might be why you feel overwhelmed. I’m an electrical engineer so i’m glad i only need to take Chem6A. Most of the engineering majors don’t require much chem anyways, so i dont think thats a good indicator of whether you should be an engineer.

you’re taking too many classes, that’s why you feel overwhelmed.
