Does it help in admissions if I send a research abstract, even if the research is not very advanced?

Hi everyone!

So I wrote a research paper and abstract for the research I did this summer, and it’s not very advanced and the research is not very good (compared to siemens and intel semifinalists). Would it still be beneficial in admissions to send a research abstract to give them an idea of what I did this summer? Would sending a abstract with bad research hurt me? Thanks so much!

It may be more useful for an admissions office to have the professor who supervised your work write a recommendation letter.

@siliconvalleymom Thanks! I’m actually already planning to send a recommendation letter from my research employer. If I already have a recommendation, would it still be helpful to send a research abstract?

@looloo17 It does not sound from your description of the abstract that you think it would help you. I think you can best showcase this accomplishment in three other ways: sending the research employer rec letter, listing it on your application with details about what you did and then incorporating your enthusiasm for research somewhere in your essays.

I wouldn’t bother with the abstract if you have a recommendation from your research employer. Admissions officers are swamped and are not looking for more things to read at this point.

I would definitely not send the actual abstract. Was this abstract at least submitted and preferably accepted to some sort of conference? If not, I don’t even know that it’s worth mentioning.

@iwannabe_Brown The abstract was submitted to the Siemens national competition, but it wasn’t selected as a semifinalist.
