Does it help to be a minority?

I'm half hispanic and half caucasian. Does this increase my chances, all things considered? And does it make financial aid more favorable considering?

@urbangirl: When it comes to prep school (and college), there are minorities and there are “under represented minorities”. I think it is this latter group where an applicant’s status can truly help with regards to admission.

It is generally held that “URM” for most schools means black/african-american, hispanic, and native american. The under-represented part means that there are fewer students of these ethnicities at a school than in the general population — or simply fewer than the school desires.

The distinction between minorities and URMs comes into play because there is no shortage of applicants with Asian/Indo-Pak sub-continent heritage. I read somewhere that it’s hardest for Asian girls to get into BS, as there are so many qualified candidates who fit that description (perhaps due to so-called “Tiger” parenting?).

I’m guessing your part-Hispanic background should work in your favor…as long as everything else (scores, grades, etc.) are in the ballpark. Note that in our family’s search/application/visit/revisit process last year, I saw MANY mixed race families. That was surprising, because in my day-to-day life I see very few families of mixed ethnicity.

oh yay…I’m an Asian girl. And I don’t have tiger parents…I guess that’s a bad thing?
