Does it look bad if I apply to like 20 colleges?

Does it look bad if I apply to like 20 colleges?

look bad to who?

all of the colleges I am applying to at the same time

20 colleges is alot… and you would need to put effort into each application. try reducing it down to 10.

why should a college know where else you are applying?

outside of your friends/counselor questioning you, no. be wary of stretching yourself too thin, you’d need to start early to give all 20 schools’ app proper attention

I think most people would agree that 20 is a lot, but would also agree that some people do. No need to worry that it “looks bad” in any way. However, drinksuited and lilmelonred said it well: you really need to give each app your best effort. Otherwise, it could cause you more harm than good.

20 means ~32 essay. It’ll take almost 75 days. Very long process.

You do not have to tell any college where else you are applying…just leave that blank on your applications- it is not a required question

I would forbid my kids from applying to 20 schools. 1) be decisive – you can’t tell me you’d REALLY want to attend all 20, 2) focus on doing well on the few apps you do send in, 3) it’s a waste of money, 4) your Guid counselor will hate you – and that’s not a good thing when he/she has to write comments on your behalf.

Yes I know some families do this to compare Fin Aid and such. However whenever I hear of this on CC, it’s mostly b/c the student puts off committing and making choices in December. Don’t do it.

It really depends on your grades and finances.

If you’re not the “top” of your class then maybe you do need to apply to 20, but you have to put in a lot of time.
DD applied to 15, got into 8, received half tuition for 3 colleges and 1 college full ride.

Wouldn’t suggest anymore than 10. I actually only applied to 4 because my #1 accepted me before I finished my other 4

Without knowing why OP needs to apply to 20 schools, there is no way to determine what is appropriate for her.

She has not explained the why part of it yet.

One could technically file one app each in California and Texas and cover 20 schools by paying 20 school fees.

Two applications could be used to apply to 32 California public universities (one for UCs, one for CSUs). They do not use counselor or teacher recommendations, nor do they require transcripts at application time (transcripts are required only after matriculation and graduation from high school to verify the self-reported courses and grades), so those applications would not require any work on the part of the school. Of course, that would require a lot of application fees.

Chloe, the other schools don’t have to know that you’re applying to them. Did you plan on telling them? ;)

Applying to 15 or 20 creates “the problem”. The problem is that this trend makes college admit rates look exclusive. Colleges LOVE candidates that do this in the generic, and the HATE it in the specific. Why? They love you spending your money this way, and inflating everyone’s app vs. admit rates to make them look exclusive…but they hate spending the the time and money recruiting you, when it’s highly unlikely you’ll attend their school. They just dont’ know which ones you are. LOL

It’ll be fine I applied to 19 colleges and got into 17 and didn’t start my apps besides the one ED until December. It really wasn’t even that bad writing all the essays. Just don’t leave it to the last minute

icollins, why did you want to apply to so many schools?

Although you don’t actually tell colleges where you are applying elsewhere, they can actually pull that data of the CSS and FAFSA forms if they are super interested. I don’t think they’ll care THAT much, but it might just be too hard for you.
