Does it matter if my "academic interests" don't connect with my "intended major?"

I was writing short answers for the Maryland application, and I was wondering if my other academic interests will affect my application.

Let's say I was applying for computer engineering, is it preferred that I put something more related to engineering like physics or math, rather than something I really enjoy more, like history or anthropology?

And something I was contemplating about also, will the admissions officers look that closely to our application? Because I heard all the bigger state universities just look at your GPA and school records and decide, then they'll look more closely once they've admitted you.
