Does it matter where I go for undergrad?

I'm a high school senior and will be applying to college in the upcoming months. I want to go to like UCSD or UCLA (Big named schools) but I don't know if I'll be accepted. Furthermore, say I go to like SDSU will it effect me if I try to go to med school and a prestigious school like Stanford? Overall, I want to save money but experience the big college like, but does it matter where I go for my undergrad?

Medical schools don’t particularly care where you get your B.S. degree. They look at your MCAT scores, your resume, and letters of recommendation. Then you have to sell yourself at the interview. Since medical school is expensive, it is not a bad idea to avoid large amounts of debt in your undergraduate program.

Basically: no.
As long as you’re going to a school with solid academics, that’s good enough. As xray said, all those other things are way important than the name of the institution. Go somewhere that’s a good fit, that’s financially feasible, and where you will have opportunties to excel and get clinical experience.

Lefty…

Your lowish SAT isn’t competitive for Stanford or other big name schools ( 1510 all 3 sections).

however, your GPA will likely mean that you’ll get accepted to at least one UC (UW 3.9…what is your UC GPA?)

That said, if you do well at any Calif public and do well on the MCAT, you can be competitive for med school.

You should try to attend a school where you be a very strong student. You should avoid schools where the other premeds are much stronger than you are.

My UC GPA is 4.33.

You should observe and learn about me in person rather than to conclude that I am not a strong student due to a standardized test score. Thank you (:

Mom2 meant strong relative to your peers. An SAT score of 1510 would put you at the very bottom of the class at a school like Stanford if you somehow got in. That’s not a good situation to be in regardless of your aspirations.

I’m not interested in Stanford for undergrad…
