Does it matter where you do a Pre-Med Post Bacc?

People from families recently immigrated from Spain are not URMs.

^^Perhaps not, but that still does not mean that it is not a boost at some/many grad/professional schools.

BDM…I never thought people from Spain were URMs either until our D applied for college and filled out the Common App:

This is from page 1 – the “Demographics” section. I can’t figure out how someone from Spain is different from any other European, but according to the Common App, they are. I have no clue if the demographics section on AMCAS or TMDSAS has the same qualifiers.

The thread had a pretty good discussion of it earlier, I think. AAMC used to list four specific ethnicities that counted as URM, and Spanish was not among them. While they no longer use such a categorical list, that’s likely the foundation for what most places do now. Anyway, the OP explained that usually these forms ask you to specify a Central or South American country of identification.

according to the aamc worksheet, the optional boxes to check are:

Hispanic, Latino, or of Spanish origin
American Indian or Alaska Native Asian
Black or African-American
Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander White
Other

https://www.aamc.org/students/download/181674/data/application_worksheet.pdf

realistically, this whole discussion is rather silly. If a school needs to boost the numbers of its Hispanic matriculants, it will do what it can to accomplish that goal to meet an institutional need.

Any thinking to the contrary is just plain illogical (and politically/organizationally naive).

They may use the census definition (which include those with origins in Spain):
[Hispanic or Latino Origin](http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/meta/long_RHI725211.htm)

My daughter is planning to take a gap year no matter what.

I’m sure you’re right here. We just didn’t know that before coming to this forum.

That is something we are very grateful for.

“Fun” and “funny” are relative and subjective. Either way, I appreciate the advice that has been given.
