Does it matter where you do your undergrad from as long as you get a 30+ and a 3.5+?

<<<<<<<<<<

if you can combine a good GPA with a decent MCAT, as you have listed, it usually does not matter as much what college you went to. Having said that, that often is not the case the medical school adcoms face. A more common scenario is GPA and MCAT discordance- a 3.8 from state U with a MCAT of 24 and a Swarthmore or Cornell grad with a 3.2 and a MCAT of 34 etc..When there is a discordance, most adcoms will go with the MCAT score. The Dean of admission at Univ. of Michigan addresses that a little bit here:

http://www.umich.edu/~umaed/AED%20General%20Meeting%20Minutes%2012-7-04.doc

Those stats aren't even that good anymore. You need more like a 3.7 gpa

I disagree. This, like hubbellgardner alluded to, depends on your undergraduate institution. A great place to look is www.mdapplicants.com People post anonymous profiles with information including their undergrad college, their undergrad GPA, their ECs, and where they were rejected/accepted. This applicant http://www.mdapplicants.com/viewprofile.php?id=6 from Stanford was admitted to UCSF with a 3.55 overall, while this applicant http://www.mdapplicants.com/viewprofile.php?id=1600 from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo was rejected from UCSF with 3.9 overall. There are so many factors to consider other than GPA; this website can give you some idea of what med schools look for.

National mean is about 3.6. If the mean is the same as the median, then about half of kids who get into med school have below a 3.6. 3.5 is pretty close.

3.5 mean for jhu =D but that's only .1 which probably accounts for the deflation a little...

Well the average GPA of a Swarthmore applicant who is accepted to a medical school is 3.47 (in 2005). The average GPA of a Swarthmore applicant who is accepted to an ivy league med school is 3.72.

So I think it depends on your school really. Swat has a rep of being tough and so I think med schools recognize that and give applicants from Swat a little leniency. I'm sure this applies to schools similar to Swat as well. Other undergrad colleges may suggest a higher average GPA if you are thinking of applying to med school.

ranked #3 liberal arts college...why am i not surprised...that college is like harder than what ever is ranked #1 for universities

"Well the average GPA of a Swarthmore applicant who is accepted to a medical school is 3.47 (in 2005)"

Similar to Davidson, where it was around 3.4 for successful applicants. It does, very much, depend on the school and its rep.
