After exploring this site, to get into lower ivy ( + Duke, Northwestern) I'm seeing that a 30-31 is good enough for regular decision rounds?

Am I right, or do I have this wrong?

Thanks in advance!

You are wrong. Those averages are inaccurate because very few canidates submit just the ACT. Most submit the SAT and sometimes the SAT + the ACT. You can get in with those scores, but don't count on it.

lol well I am from a midwestern state, and I do realize that many people submit the SAT + ACT, but I'd like to clarify some of the information you've presented. If you've looked around, which I'm sure you have, the number of peope taking both tests has ALMOST evened out. The stats were something like 51% taking the SAT and 49% taking ACT. Although the SAT is still ahead, but as you can clearly see...only by 2%. Besides, many schools consider them equal, so why not play to your strengths?

You're both right. The ACT averages at many schools are often an inacurate representation of their admissions -- especially the coastal schools. However, Northwestern is in the Midwest, so I think they would mostly get students taking the ACT.

Your 30-31 score is decent for those colleges, but as someone else mentioned, you shouldn't count on it to get into the elite colleges.

Well, if you place any faith in the ACT to SAT conversion charts, you can simply convert your ACT score to a SAT score and compare it to the middle 50% admitted.

A 30-31 sounds about right to me as the 'middle ground' at those schools, but a score alone isn't going to get you admitted. Top tier schools are probably even more likely than most to place a lot more emphasis on EC's, diversity, GPA, than they do on the ACT/SAT scores alone.

I'm sure the op is well aware of the top tier schools' emphasis on facets other than standardized testing.

boo21--youre fine. don't obsess about it.

but why would anyone want to continue looking at Duke? an administration that has remained silent on its lax students who are clearly being prosecuted without any substantive evidence. You deserve better.

Stop turning every thread into a LAX post Musictoad-there's a whole thread with over 10,000 posts for you to indulge in your silly agenda. The poster obviously wants to look at Duke and Northwestern for their stellar academics and strong reputation.

Boo21- I would suggest trying to raise your scores if you want a more competitive edge.

A 30-31 won't keep you out. It's a solid score, but if you think you can increase a couple more composite points then it wouldn't hurt to take the test again. I have friends who have gotten 30-32 and they have gotten into: Georgetown, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Cornell, etc.

^haha and these aren't URMs right?
