Is it a big deal if a student gets a card from a college to which she applied stating that the application is complete and being reviewed and it's addressed to the wrong gender?

Yes, because we have been told that schools's balance out their classes with all types of diversity, including gender. So chance of admission might be affected.

Plus, your kid might get assigned to the wrong dorm room, like in that old Love American Style episode.

I can't imagine that it's really a big deal, but I can understand that it's disconcerting. I'd tell my kid to call admissions and just say "thanks for the card--fwiw, I'm a guy/girl, though." Hadn't thought about the LAS aspect, though--lol.

She sent an email to correct it, but she was freaking about it.

Oh great! I now have the Love American Style themesong stuck in my head. Thanks a lot, folks! :)

BTW, zoos, I concur with calling, just for peace of mind.

Love, Love, Love

Love, American Style,
Truer than the Red, White and Blue.
Love, American Style,
That's me and you.

And on a star spangled night my love, (My love come to me).
You can rest you head on my shoulder.
Out by the dawn's early light, my love
I will defend your right to try.

Love, American Style,
That's me and you.

These lyrics make no more sense to me now than they did back then.

sticker....where do you come up with this stuff?

From my formative years, the Friday night line up was The Deal!

Check out these heavyweights:

Fall 1971
8:00 The Brady Bunch
8:30 The Partridge Family
9:00 Room 222
9:30 The Odd Couple
10:00 Love American Style

70's television doesn't get any better than that when you are 11 years old!

I was in college in 1971; we didn't have tvs. Looks like I lucked out.

OP

I recommend calling the admissions office. I haven't always gotten responses from e-mail contact. The call might also show interest. I've been told by people who work in adm. offices that the small schools keep a tally of contacts (of course you don't want to go overboard and pester them, but this warrants a call, imo).

My parents didn't allow LAS in our house. They thought it was disrespectful of marriage. What a long way we've come!

We have the same problem. You cannot determine my ds gender based on her name. We gave her a family name and, at the time, I thought it would be great as she got older because employers would not be able to tell if she was male or female thus gender would not prevent her from getting interviews. I guess it worked, as we have had several schools send information addressed to Dear Mr .. I find it interesting that I am now annoyed that they arent getting her gender correct! She did try to get it changed at one school but they continue to send information to Mr . She has decided not to apply there, mainly for other reasons but this certainly did not help. I might also add that she hated her name as a child but seems to really like it now.

My name is also often a man's name (the difference being in the spelling between male and female), and it hasn't mattered in the least. Except when I was 18 - I got a reminder to register for the draft! And that was way back when the draft meant something. I had to send in my birth certificate showing I was female before they'd let me off the hook.

However, my alma mater sent me some fundraising materials addressed to "Mr." Needless to say, they didn't get my money - having gone there for a number of years, they should have gotten my gender correct!

We have the same problem with my oldest daughter's name as well. Though to me it sounds infinitely feminine (yet strong), my D keeps insisting that the only other people she knows with her name are HUGE football players lol.

Once, after my D had been in a h.s. class for two months, I had emailed the teacher about something and offhandedly asked how she was doing grade-wise. When I got the reply, "OH! HE"S a GREAT student...has a strong A in here!" I about fell out of my chair. OMG. Well, I guess the teacher had ONLY had her for TWO months!

~berurah

Berurah--I think your D and mine have the same name--I also think hers is pretty and strong at the same time, but lately seems to be sported by hulking football players. Weird, huh?

My daughter's name is somewhat gender neutral, too. It seems very popular these days among male race-car drivers.

Your Daughter's name is Rusty?

Haha! Nope, not Rusty and not Dale or Junior, either.

Kyle is my guess.;)

And on a star spangled night my love, (My love come to me).
You can rest you head on my shoulder.
Out by the dawn's early light, my love
I will defend your right to try.

Wait a minute. That last word was TRY? I always thought it was CRY! I will defend your right to CRY! I thought she was crying because she had, uh, lost her innocence during the star-spangled night, and he was being all chivalrous about it.
