Does it mean anything when colleges send you material?

I've been receiving huge volumes of mail from colleges (this is normal for juniors, right?) and I was wondering if there's any significance to receiving material from schools. Is this genuine interest or just advertising, and does it signify a better chance with admissions from that school? I've been receiving stuff all over the place, from schools I ruled out a long time ago (Ball State, Simon's Rock, OSU) to schools I'm much more interested in (Columbia University, University of Chicago, Williams and USNA.) Your thoughts?

Pure advertisements. It truely means nothing.

Means you have junk mail.

It means you checked the box on the PSAT to receive college mail.

means u did good on the PSAT.

My thoughts: (1) get some big green garbage bags and (2) tell the colleges in which you're not interested to take you off their mailing list. Save some trees. :-)

Cynical, I know, but think it means colleges want to improve their stats, if they boost number of applicants they lower the percentage that they accept -- makes them look more exclusive (ie school that accepts only 30% looks better than one that accepts 70%).

Email is much more environmentally friendly than snail mail.

means nothing. Put out a big box for WUSTL; many people here report they send you that much stuff...

nope. means nothing
