Why is everyone obsessed with going to the most selective school they can get into? What is wrong with a state school, especially since it's so much cheaper?

Wow, this seems to be a popular question lately on CC.

I personally don't see a point in going to a selective college IF YOU HAVE CONSIDERABLY CHEAPER OPTIONS. But that is because I plan on going to graduate school. If I can earn an excellent GPA and GRE scores from a cheap state school, why would I pay a ridiculous amount of money to go to a selective school for undergraduate? A 4.0 GPA and excellent GRE scores (and other factors) will make me a fine candidate for graduate admission at ANY school in the country, Ivy League included.
