Well, one of my friend only has a weighted 3.5 GPA and she got an 18 on her ACT Composite Score and 500s in all of her SATs, but she has pretty low SAT Subject scores too. I read her personal statement essays and they were pretty well-written. She doesnt have much EC's, but has around 150 community service hours. She just got accepted to UCSD yesterday! I don't understand how she got in because I got a 3.5 GPA as well. Although, I did got much lower SAT Subject scores than her and a 17 ACT Composite Score. I have 89 community service hours and alot of EC's. I don't think my personal statements were that bad...I thought they were okay..but not GREAT. The thing I don't understand is because UCSD was really hard to get in last year, it seems like admission officers are less harsh on freshmen applicants this year. I mean their average GPA was a 4.06 last year..

Well some of the stats about UCSD may be overrated. But I didn’t get in this year. I have a 3.75 GPA from a rather challenging high school, 1840 on SAT I, and my two highest SATII scores was 800 and 630. My essay was pretty good according to some ppl who read it and my sister is currently a freshman at UCSD. I really don’t know how I didn’t get in… does anyone thing I should get an appeal?

^ It happens, you never know with Adcoms

There’s a lot of factors, they do use holistic approach, that might had contributed.

I know around here on CC, lots of people with 2000+ and 3.9/4.0 are being rejected

Here are last year’s stats. Average GPA over 4.0 and average SAT score 1940. And unfortunately, having a sibling at a UC does not help. There is no legacy reference of any kind.

These stats will probably go up this year as they are taking fewer freshmen and as more top students are choosing state schools because of money issues in this economy.,
