Does joining the Honors program make a difference?

I'm a freshman at my school and I am not in the honors program. I was wondering, would it be beneficial to apply next year? I really want to get into a good medical school, but can't I just take high level classes without going to the honors college? Is that even possible? Honestly, I'm a little confused at this point. Do those in the Honors college take different science courses that are more rigorous/better? And if not, then what difference does it make if I'm in it or not?

For example, my schools Honors program requires a semester studying abroad. . .but I can do that anyways (and am planning to) without being in the Honors program, so what difference does it make?

If someone could explain this to me, I would greatly appreciate it!

There’s already a thread discussing this topic:

Do whatever you want, Med. Schools do not care. The greatest benefit of Honors is priority registration and another onw is very small classes with closer relationships with profs, better chances at great LORs
Studying abroad is a very positive experience.
You alone can assess what difference can Honors do for your 4 years at college.

Oh, sorry I didn’t find that thread, thank you for directing me!
