Does legacy apply to uncles attending that college/university?

I haven't seen the common application so I don't know how legacy is inquired about, but have been wondering about this issue. Does legacy just matter when it's the parents, or can uncles be mentioned? And does legacy really matter that much?
Uncle legacy would be UVa and Rice.
Thanks.

Generally, no. It's usually direct ancestors only (parents, perhaps grandparents). Check UVA and Rice's websites for their definition of legacy. If they don't have one, contact the admissions office and ask.

Uncles usually don't count for legacy tip.

But it could help to gauge your interest; like if you visited the uncle a lot while he attended Rice/UVA and he loved Rice/UVA because ___ and you know you would love Rice/UVA because___

No, uncles would not count for the legacy tip at those schools. As Muffy says, however, it can be a good point to make in terms of discussing what you like about the schools. For schools of this selectivity, it may not be much of a factor, but sometimes with smaller schools, especially if you are coming from out of the geographics, the adcoms feel more comfortable when there is an element of familiarity or connection with the schools since many such applicants will end up at colleges close to where they live.

so im guessing cousins doesnt either

Right; cousin doesn't either.

Disheartening but realistic advice--again. I really value this website for that. Best not to get hopes up too high.

Thanks so much to all who responded.
