Does location actually matter?

I visited berkeley's campus as well as ucla's and I liked ucla's campus a looooot more. Berkeley seemed a little ghetto and boring. I was wondering to what degree people consider location as a factor in their decisions. Berkeley's campus doesnt seem unbearably dirty or boring but I'm worried that I might not like it maybe two to three years from now. I actually didn't really mind the dirtiness of the campus because I would be able to live with it, but LA's campus is a lot prettier. The only reason i would choose LA over berkeley is the location ( I live in LA and UCLA's campus is awesome). Berkeley is stronger in my major though ( MCB/ Biochemistry). Has anyone ever chosen location over education?

You have to be happy where you are. If you don't get a good feeling about Berkeley and you do about UCLA, there's your answer.
I get the opposite feelings that you do about UCLA/Berkeley. I live in So Cal too. I guess everyone is different.

Go to UCLA, you sound like you'll like it better there. Personally, I think Cal's campus is much nicer and more stimulating. Apples and oranges...

go with your gut instincts. most people either love or hate berkeley. i don't think you can grow to love it if you don't right off the bat.

Many people choose location/weather over education. {ersonally, I think that there are many more interesting things to do in Berkeley than Westwood/LA, and that many of them are easier to get to, but it's also interesting in many places. But anyway, if you like UCLA, it's comporable in the program. Enjoy.

i like Berkeley wayy more than UCLA...
UCLA looked a little too typical SoCal for me. well, i am in need of some change since I have been living in SoCal for a while and i'm kinda growing sick of it now...

but i guess it's all preference. go where you want to go. :)

Westwood is much less of a college town than Berkeley. I am originally from there; weekends, it's absolutely swarming with high school students, and other times it's full of yuppy couples or their families. And it's much harder to get anywhere if you don't have a car. but agreed w/ everyone: go where it feels right

Berkeley's campus is full of nature, UCLA has nicer buildings. If you like walking across little bridges over creeks and through trees and over grassy hills, then Berkeley is better. If you like buildings, go for UCLA!

If I lived in LA, I would have gone to UCLA just because it seems like a great environment and it would be closer to home. The choice for me just boiled down to proximity to home because I liked them both equally. I didn't want to have to take a plane just to see my dog.

Location location location. It matters. Part of what made me choose UCLA as an undergrad and UCSD for grad was location.

I can't handle snow. I hate cold weather. This basically limits me to California.

Oh well. :)

collegemom2006* "When I was visiting UCLA last week, Westwood seemed full of USC students! "*
It is all a matter of personal choice. Maybe the USC students chose the school for the education but still like to shop in places like Westwood.By the way...were they all wearing their USC shirts that day?

I was at UCLA's Welcome Day 2 weeks ago and went up the night before. I was surprised at how many USC students were hanging out in Westwood compared to UCLA students. Westwood seems really safe to walk around at night so maybe that's why.
