Does major matter on finalist application?

My daughter is finishing up her application and I was told that certain majors are more likely to get awards. Does anyone have the information or stats on this?

She would not be eligible for a corp award not having a parent working for one of those participating corporations. I read that having an “unusual” major might give a kid an advantage for those but what about the plain old NMS of $2500? It seems like most of the NMS awards actually went to either science or math majors.

Thanks in advance if you have any information.

Lots of views, no answers so I thought that I would pop back in and add what I found out so far. Major doesn’t seem to matter much. However, I did find out that corporate awards are not just for kids of parents who work for specific corporations. Some of the corporate awards are given out based on geography or majors so it’s not true that my DD would not be eligible for those awards. The “unusual” majors that could garner one a corporate award are industry specific and whatever your child puts down for a major now, if the kid is in the running for one of those awards down the road, the student would be contacted and asked if that was still the intended major. Interesting!

Unless something has changed recently, there aren’t many corporate awards for non-children of employees. I remember seeing a few that were major-specific.
