Yes, I am a band geek. But because of Marching Band ( a mandatory requirement for people in school band) I had to quit all of my other sports...since Marching band was taking way too much time.

But this is considered a sport credit at my school ( and varsity credit given after 3 years haha )...does it look bad if I don't have the Varsity sports that everyone else applying to ND seems to be doing?

I know ND has a really nice Marching Band...

I would think it would be a very desirable EC for Notre Dame. I think it's probably a lot easier to find athletes than it is to find enthusiastic members for marching band. But others more familiar with ND might want to also respond...good luck!

I know a little bit about this one, my son is a freshman in the marching band at ND this year. He did not play any varsity sports in high school but was the drum major in his high school marching band and a soloist in the jazz band. So yes, I would say your marching band experience is easily as impressive to the admissions office as playing a varsity sport.

FYI - roughly 500 students tried out for the ND marching band this fall, 120 were cut. It has been an absolutely incredible experience for my son, who will be heading to the Sugar Bowl over the Christmas break. He's very excited.

wow that awesome starfish... he must be excited.....

i luv those uni's

Admissions people, I would imagine, think "time commitment" when they think of extracurricular activities. A section leader or a drum major in a high school marching band could very easily dedicate as much time to that as some backup varsity athlete does to his or her sport. Yes, marching bands in high school range from the very serious, morning-and-afternoon two hour practice bands..to bands like the one I was in (more of a football pep band).

But they know how serious time commitments bands usually are.

Band members and the band managers put in long hard hours and if you ask them they will tell you its worth every minute of their time. Its an unbelievable experience. When you think of ND you almost always think football, the Band of the Fighting Irish and great academics...... Band members also recieve 1 credit hour for band participation. I believe for credit as PT :)
