Since they're both calculus-base, does 16A prepare you for 1B by any means? Or are they totally two different course and can't be linked together?

Wondering the same thing because I got a 5 on the AP Calc AB test and I want to take 16A to review and not struggle as much first semester and possibly take 1B second semester.

Math 1B requires Math 1A or equivalent, not Math 16A. Here are the course outlines:

[Math 1A - UC Berkeley Department of Mathematics](http://math.berkeley.edu/courses_lowerdivcourses_math1A.html)
[Math 16A - UC Berkeley Department of Mathematics](http://math.berkeley.edu/courses_lowerdivcourses_math16A.html)

5 on AP Calculus AB => you are probably ready for Math 1B
