Does may 15th really mean May 15th?

So I applied to two small, competitive LACs, for one the application deadline was March 1st and the other had a deadline of April 1st. I applied to both in the last week of February. Now I'm playing the waiting game and stressing out about it, both of them list May 15th as the latest date that they'll send out their decisions, which seems a bit late to me considering my last day at my current school is May 9th. On top of just wanting to know, what is stressing me out is that I still have to enroll for classes and housing at my current school in case I don't get accepted to either I applied to, and inevitably if I end up doing this I'll have to pay cancellation fees and all that terrible stuff. So my question is whether or not school generally can get out decisions much ahead of the listed date and put that just to be safe or whether it's generally right around that time? Should I get my hopes up about hearing back sometime in the next couple weeks or be more prepared to stick it out until May? Any advice from anyone who has gone through this would be great.

Edit: If I called the admissions offices and asked them this would I just be an annoyance to them or would they take it well?

generally 15th is 15th, but you can call them to ask. I don’t think they will remember who call them.
