I'm very interested in going to McGill, but I'm a little confused about their program(s) for students who want to pursue a career in medicine... Do I have to apply to a pre-med program? Or do I just choose a science major and later apply to the medical school? Someone please explain. Thanks!

As I replied to your post on another thread:
McGill, like many if not most schools, does not have a “Pre-med” major. Most students who are premed apply to the life sciences profile in the Faculty of Science. Life Sciences has the highest admission standards of all programs at McGill.

However, it is possible to major in most anything as long as you take the required premed courses as electives.

Unless you are coming out of a Qu

however, you can do a bachelor’s in any program provided you have met the pre-requisites for med. they can be found here:

[Admission requirements for the MDCM, MD-PhD and MD-MBA programs](http://www.mcgill.ca/medicine/admissions/criteria/med-r-reqs/)

but as the above poster pointed out, often people who wish to do med school will go into the life sciences because the pre-reqs are part of the bachelor’s curriculum.

ok will anyone taking these “supposed” prereqs for med school from mcgill actually get into top U.S. med schools like JHU? i know mcgill is world wide recognized…but will a med degree from mcgill be legitimate for a u.s. hospital? and what is that degree’s caliber. I’m just asking because I would like to know my options since the system in canada is so different from U.S. Thanks :D

McGill, and all medical schools in Canada including the francophone schools, are fully accredited by the AAMC/AMA. Canadian medical school grads are not considered to be foreign medical school grads in the US.

As a publicly funded school however, there are only a small number of spaces open for American medical students at McGill. The Faculty of Medicine is the only program that limits non-Canadian applicants.

Many McGill grads, both American and Canadian, go on to medical schools in the US.

awesome! Thanks

mcgill’s faculty of medicine is actually one of the best in the world. A MD from mcgill will be very reputable in US. In fact, I believe one of JHU’s founders was a mcgill alum, Dr Osler. There is a library and a whole lot more named after him at mcgill.

Undergraduate studies is a different story. Only a small handful of students will go to JHU for medical school. If you work really hard, score really well on mcat, and have some interesting extracurricular then you definitely have a chance, just like students from good state schools. But you are not going to have any advantage by virtue of going to mcgill.

oh wow, I never considered that. But I guess anywhere if you do badly during undergrad, it would be hard to get an admission to a top med school.
