Does Michigan have an Early Decision program? Does it help with acceptance?

I'm planning on applying to U of M next fall and was wondering if they had an Early Decision program. If they do will it help with me with getting accepted?

The following is my profile: (BTW this is a prediction of what my profile will be, although I'm pretty sure this is what it will look like)

HS GPA: 3.5
ACT score: 32 (Taking it again, hopefully will score higher)
PSAT: 180

Extracurriculars: Track (not varsity) for 4 years, Diversity club for 2 years, Bowling club (I don't know if colleges care about that) for 4 years, Tech Crew for 2 years, National Honors Society member, And the Robotics team for 1 year.

AP classes:
Junior Year: AP Lang./Comp. and AP U.S. history
Senior Year: Will be taking AB calc., AP US Government, and AP Bio

-I've had a fairly heavy course load throughout high school. AP/Honors classes every year.

-I also have about 30 hours of Community Service and did a summer program at Michigan last summer.
-My mom lives an hour and a half away from my High School and we drive there every morning and drive home every afternoon. (I kinda worked this into my essay, not real substantial but was a bit of a hindrance at times)
-2 of my Uncles, 2 of my Aunts, my Dad, and my Grandfather went to U of M.
-I am a Michigan resident.
-I've been playing guitar for 3 years. It's just a hobby and haven't really done anything with it, I douby Michigan will really care about it.

I'm really worried that my GPA is too low for acceptance, I know they place a lot on that credential. I'm hoping my ACT score and possible decision of Early Decision will help bridge that gap and earn me acceptance. Thanks for any comments in advance.

yes they do have an early decision plan, and it contributes GREATLY to your chances of being accepted. DEFINITELY apply early.

GPA is huge for UMich, they typically favor a high GPA to a high ACT in almost all cases.

I was accepted early decision OOS with a 28 ACT and a 3.91 GPA if that tells you anything.

If you’re applying from in-state, I’d say you have a 85-95% chance of admittance with early decision, and if you’re out of state, I’d say you have a 45-60% chance. Definitely work on your GPA if you can though, but your ACT is a really solid score, but it can’t hurt to try and go higher!

Thanks. Also, what does senior year mean for Michigan? If I do really well senior year will that do anything for me? I know if I do ED it probably won’t help, but I also know that some colleges ask people who get wait listed/differed for like their first trimester (or semester) grades of their senior year.

lightja pretty much said everything that there is to say, but i’ll repeat it anyway, lol.

yes, michigan does have an early decision program. however, it’s called early response because you’ll receive your decision earlier. your act looks good, extra-curriculars look good too, and it’s good that you took all AP/honor classes every year. michigan really likes it when students take the hardest courses available. as for your gpa, it isn’t that high (no offense), but there have been students accepted with lower ones. plus, a hard course load, good SAT/ACT scores, and lots of ECs will help to make up for a low gpa.

but you should definitely apply early, and even in the ER period, make sure that your app. and extra things get in as fast as possible. for example, the deadline for this year was nov. 1. don’t send in your app. a few days before the deadline. try to get it in a few months before the deadline so that you have an even higher chance.

now, for your second question.

senior year does mean alot for michigan. and ED helps alot too. if you get accepted, just don’t fail any classes or get lots of Cs and Ds. as for sending in senior grades: if you apply ER and you don’t get accepted, then you’ll be deferred. now, there’re 2 types of deferral letters. one is where it requires you to send in your first semester of senior year grades (aka 7th semester grades). the other is where you don’t have to send in your 7th semester grades. if you get the letter that tells you to send in your 7th semester grades, then you HAVE to send them in or your app. won’t be considered. if you get the letter that doesn’t (the letter will say that sending them in will help your chances), then only send them in if you get straight As.

well, that’s pretty much it, lol. hope i was helpful. btw, do you know what college of michigan’s you plan on applying to? some colleges are harder to get into than others.

Thanks. I’m probably gonna apply to LSA, I don’t know how difficult that is to get into in comparison to others, except for Ross which I know is very competitive. Also, how much value does Michigan place on the essay? I know my sister who applied with a 3.7 and a 27 ACT had a decent essay (according to her) and was wait listed. Also, does anyone else have an opinion on my chances besides Lightja? (BTW thank you Lightja for the chance)

well, lsa is easier to get into than it is to get into ross, or CoE. based off of your stats, i think you have a pretty good shot for lsa. as for essays, i don’t really know how much emphasis michigan puts on them, but i heard that they can play a pretty big role for students with bad stats.

You will have no problem getting into Michigan as long as you fill out your application competely and put time into your essays. Your chances diminish if you do not complete this within the early decision period.

Thanks for all the responses. Also, and sorry I know this is getting a bit drawn out, I’m very nervous my GPA is going to be the death of my acceptance, I was wondering if my weighted GPA (which is about a 4.0) will matter much when applying.

No U of M doesn’t have an early decision program, it’s early response.

Sorry, one last piece of info. My ACT writing score was a 10 out of 12.

many of the above posts are wrong except yosup. Michigan doesn’t have early decison. Early decision means that if you get in you are bound to the college and you must go there. For that reason, ED usually helps a lot of candidates get into schools because it shows them that’s their number 1 choice and they cant back out. However, Michigan doesn’t have this. They have a modified rolling system with an “early response”. This basically means that if you submit it by the deadline you can find out earlier. They don’t give priority to those who submit for early response but it is a nice load off your shoulders during your senior year. It doesn’t necessarily help because it’s non-binding so it doesnt really raise the acceptance rate, however, because Michigan has a rolling system make sure you apply early next year, it can help as spots fill up. good luck I wanted to go to michigan but I go to UNC CH instead, didn’t get in I applied very late, don’t know if this was the reason
